The Sydney Swans have again topped the annual Roy Morgan AFL supporter ladder as the only club with over 1 million supporters. The Swans now have 1.031 million supporters, an increase of 27,000 (+2.7%) on a year ago, according to the 2021 annual Roy Morgan AFL club supporters survey. Almost all of the AFL’s 18 clubs experienced a rise in support during the year to June 2021, and some of the biggest increases have come for teams enjoying success during the last two years. The clubs to experience the largest rise in support include Grand Finalists the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne, 2019-2020 Premiers Richmond and two of the most consistent performers during 2020 and 2021, the Brisbane Lions and Port Adelaide. Although COVID-19 has played havoc with scheduling throughout the last two years there are now more people than ever before, 8,857,000, expressing support for an AFL club, an increase of 1,335,000 (+17.7%) on a year ago. In addition, there are 7,580,000 Australians who watched an AFL match on TV, down 81,000 (-1.1%) on a year ago.

‘Tigers of (not so) old’ vs. ‘pride of South Australia’ for AFL Flag

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that AFL Grand Finalist the Adelaide Crows have 541,000 fans, which is enough to place the club fifth for total AFL supporters in 2017. Their opponents the Richmond Tigers boast 442,000 supporters around Australia, with one of the AFL’s best conversion rates of supporters to members – ranking fourth and converting 16.4% of supporters to members in 2017. Of the two clubs, Richmond are clearly adept at attracting younger supporters with 18.2% of Richmond supporters under 25 compared to only 12.5% of Adelaide supporters – an impressive statistic considering the unsuccessful Richmond teams of recent decades. The age profile of the respective supporter bases underlies why more Adelaide supporters (63.5%) watch the AFL on TV than Richmond supporters (59.8%), and also, conversely, why more Tigers supporters (11.0%) actually play Australian Football compared to only 6.4% of Adelaide supporters.

Sydney Swans will play against the Western Bulldogs in the grand final of the Australian Football League on 1 October 2016. The match could be seen as a clash between the clubs representing the corporate elite (Sydney Swans) and the working-class (Western Bulldogs). Sydney Swans chairman Andrew Pridham is unperturbed by this perception. Fittingly, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will support the Swans while Opposition Leader Bill Shorten will be supporting the Bulldogs on 1 October.

Punters who have backed Essendon to win the 2016 Australian Football League premiership will be offered a refund by Sportsbet in the wake of the landmark ruling on the supplements scandal. The firm notes that Essendon had been heavily backed to win both its first game of the season and the premiership. With many Essendon players now banned for the entire season, Sportsbet is no longer accepting bets on the team that will finish last on the AFL ladder.

The 2015 Australian Football League (AFL) season begins on 2 April, amid the ongoing controversy over Essendon Football Club’s supplements saga. The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority has indicated that it may appeal after the AFL’s Anti-Doping Tribunal exonerated all of the Essendon players. Some 350 people became Essendon members immediately after the ruling, and the club expects a big profit in 2015
