Australia China Business Council president David Olsson does not expect a significant upturn in business travel to China until March. He notes that airline and rail tickets in China are scarce in the lead-up to the Lunar New Year, so many business leaders are not planning to travel to China until February or March. He adds that there a number of challenges in gaining business visas for China, as it is taking longer than usual to process visa applications and China is not yet issuing multiple-visit visas.

Beware Beijing’s ‘arbitrary detention’: DFAT

The growing tensions between Australia and China have prompted the federal government to upgrade its travel advice. The Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade has warned that Chinese authorities have detailed foreign travellers on the grounds of ‘endangering national security’, adding that Australians may be at risk of detention. DFAT also recently advised caution about travelling to Hong Kong after China introduced new national security laws for the former British colony. DFAT recommends that Australian defer all overseas travel due to the coronavirus.

Coronavirus: Australian government asks travellers to reconsider their need to travel to China

The federal government’s Smarttraveller website has updated its travel advice for China in response to the coronavirus outbreak. Australians have been advised to reconsider whether they need to travel to China at all, while Foreign Minister Marise Payne says people should not travel to Hubei province – ‘ground zero’ for the virus – under any circumstances. Meanwhile, some schools in New South Wales have urged parents to keep their children at home for the start of the school year if they have travelled to China in recent weeks.
