Roy Morgan Research CEO Michele Levine has presented the latest State of the Nation Report in Melbourne with a special Spotlight on the Australian Automotive Industry. The State of the Nation Report looks at the changes underway in the Australian automotive industry and the even bigger changes that are set to impact on every part of the industry throughout the 2020s. 2025 has been identified as a tipping point for the industry as a whole as it faces digital disruption – any automotive players that fail to plan fully for the future involving increased car-sharing, driverless cars, and purely online sales will find it far too hard to catch up to "first-movers" by the time 2025 rolls around.

John Camillo, South Australian secretary of the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union, has announced that its members have voted in favour of the new enterprise bargaining agreement (EBA) at GM Holden. It has been lodged with the Fair Work Commission, but is also likely to be the last EBA as the car maker will withdraw from local assembly by 2017. Until then wages will increase 3% per annum, and voluntary redundancy packages are being offered that consist of 3.5 weeks’ worth of pay for each year of service

Tesla Motors will sell its electric cars directly to Australian consumers, rather than through car dealerships. The direct-selling model is used in the US, and spokesman Heath Walker is confident that this strategy will not meet with the opposition it has attracted in some US states. Tesla is also hoping to lease space in Scentre Group’s shopping centres to display its vehicles. The Tesla Model S will be priced from $A90,000 in Australia

The Australian – Page: 4 : 18-Sep-14

GM Holden has declined to comment on speculation that it will retrench 300 engineers. The car-maker has said only that the closure of its Australian manufacturing operations will be a "long and orderly" process, and that it will reduce its engineering team over a period of time. About 2,000 Holden employees will lose their jobs when production ceases in 2017
