Fans dunked as NBL postpones season opener on virus outbreaks

The first game of the 2021 National Basketball League was due to be played in regional Victoria on 10 January between the NBL’s two Melbourne teams. However, the recent COVID-19 outbreaks in Sydney and Melbourne has seen that game postponed, and the first game will now be held on 15 January between the Cairns Taipans and the Hawks in Cairns. The first two rounds of the season will be restricted to virus-free locations, while the postponed Melbourne derby has been tentatively scheduled for Bendigo on 31 January.

NBL season on a roll in joint TV rights deal

The National Basketball League has struck a broadcasting rights deal with ESPN and public broadcaster SBS, which will replace Fox Sports and the Nine Network as its broadcast partners. However, the NBL will receive a share of the TV networks’ advertising revenue in lieu of a broadcasting rights fee. The two-year deal provides for 67 NBL matches to be shown on the SBS Viceland channel, while live streams of every match in the NBL season will be available via the SBS-on-demand service.

Almost 1 million Australians now play basketball

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey shows that nearly 1 million Australians now play basketball either regularly or occasionally. The survey also shows that 667,000 of Australia’s basketballers are men, while 324,000 are women. More than half of Australia’s basketballers are under 25 years old, with 298,000 aged under 18 years old and a further 285,000 aged 18-24. Amongst their older peers a similar number are aged either 25-34 years old (186,000) or aged 35-49 years old (199,000). Only 23,000 Australians aged 50+ play basketball. Analyisis using Roy Morgan’s Helix Personas consumer segmentation and data integration tool shows that members of the Aspirationals (8.4%), Metrotechs (6.8%) and Doing Fine (5.2%) communities are all more likely to be basketballers than regular Australians.
