Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten will announce key details of Labor’s energy policy on 22 November. Amongst other things, Labor will provide households with annual income of less than $180,000 with a rebate of up to $2,000 to install electricity storage batteries. Labor’s aim is for one million households to have storage batteries by 2025, as part of its commitment to a 50 per cent renewable energy target. Labor will also flag plans to implement the federal government’s national energy guarantee if it wins the next election.

Oil and gas producer Woodside Petroleum will reduce its energy costs and carbon emissions by installing a lithium-ion battery storage system on one of the North West Shelf’s offshore platforms. CEO Peter Coleman says Woodside considered renewable energy options before opting to replace one of the gas turbine generators on the Goodwyn offshore platform with battery storage. The battery system is expected to reduce the platform’s carbon emissions by around five per cent, and Woodside may roll out the technology at other NWS platforms if it proves to be successful.

Battery storage technology is widely tipped to be the "next big thing" for Australian households. A number of energy groups are banking on future demand for battery storage, with AGL Energy entering the market in May 2015. Red Energy, Ergon Energy and ActewAGL hope to begin selling Panasonic’s new home battery system later in 2015, after they undertake a trial of the technology. Demand for battery storage solutions is expected to be particularly high among households with solar power.
