TAB has reported that its turnover for the 10 races at Flemington on 5 November was $160.7m, which is 5.9 per cent lower than previously. TAB’s turnover on the Melbourne Cup itself was $106m. TAB processed up to 108,000 bets per minute on Cup Day, while the numbers of wagers process by Sportsbet peaked at 35,000 per minute. Racing Victoria CEO Giles Thompson says the fact that an Australian-bred and trained horse won the Melbourne Cup is likely to have affected bookmakers’ profits, as many punters backed the local horse.

Sportsbet has secured a deal to be the betting sponsor of Seven West Media’s Australian Football League broadcasts in 2017. However, rival online bookmaker CrownBet is the AFL’s official wagering partner, which gives it the first right to buy betting advertisements during the AFL broadcasts of both Seven and pay-TV channel Fox Footy. Meanwhile, CrownBet CEO Matthew Tripp says the company plans to expand its rewards scheme in states such as Western Australia.

It is estimated that bookmakers spent about $A150m on advertising during television broadcasts of sports events. Seven West Media CEO Tim Worner says a proposed ban is "draconian" and unnecessary, adding that Seven already has stricter internal rules on the issue than required by the advertising code. Sportsbet and CrownBet say they would agree to reduce their advertising during sports telecasts, but they oppose the blanket ban that is being advocated by crossbenchers Nick Xenophon and Andrew Wilkie.

Serious money on Coalition: bookies

The Canberra Times – Page: 6 : 1-Jul-16

Bookmakers say that betting trends suggest that the Australian Government will be re-elected on 2 July 2016. The Australian Labor Party’s chances of winning have lengthened to $A7, according to Centrebet’s odds, compared with $A1.10 for the Coalition. However, experience shows that the odds are not always a reliable guide. Labor won the 2015 election in Queensland despite punters backing the Coalition, while the odds suggested that Britons would vote to remain in the European Union.

New figures shows that Australian corporate bookmakers spent $A81m on advertising in the year to 31 October 2015, which is 55 per cent higher than previously. Sportsbet accounted for about $A34m of this expenditure, while CrownBet spent $A16m. Federal MP Alan Tudge says many voters have expressed their dislike for gambling ads on TV, and he notes that some state governments are taking action to increase regulation of such advertising.
