Australian online book retailer Booktopia may pursue a sharemarket float in the second half of 2016. CEO Tony Nash says the bulk of proceeds from the proposed IPO will be used to finance Booktopia’s expansion plans and invested in its supply chain processes. Booktopia’s sales are forecast to exceed $A100m in 2017, and Nash is not unduly concerned about competition from The Book Depository, which is owned by Amazon.

IBISWorld estimates that sales of books online have risen by 26 per cent annually over the last five years, compared with a five per cent-plus annual decline in retail book sales over the same period. Bookworld has benefited from the Australian dollar’s 18 per cent fall against its US counterpart in the last eight months, as it has made the online bookseller’s prices more competitive against offshore rivals. Bookworld now boasts about 1.5 million registered customers

The Australian Booksellers Association has raised objections to foreign retailers paying lower charges for shipping books to customers in Australia than the postage paid for domestic parcels. The body wrote in an open letter to Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull that local book distributors are treated unfairly by Australia Post. According to Jon Page, GM of Pages & Pages Booksellers, parcel rates have recently risen more than 60 per cent
