US-based subscription video-on-demand giant Netflix boasted 148.9 million paying subscribers worldwide at the end of March, exceeding its own forecast of 148.2 million. However, Netflix added just 1.7 million new customers in the US during the March quarter, compared with overall customer growth of 9.6 million. Netflix has forecast that subscriber numbers will grow by five million in the June quarter, including 300,000 in the US. Netflix is facing growing competition from rival streaming services.

The S&P 500 has gained 23 per cent since late December 2018, and it is close to a record high. However, some observers expect the S&P 500 to record year-on-year negative earnings growth in the March 2019 quarter, for the first time in about three years. Michael Wilson of Morgan Stanley and Tobias Levkovich of Citigroup are upbeat about the earnings outlook for the March quarter, but they are cautious about the outlook for the second half of 2019.

Strong US earnings growth tipped but it’s unlikely to last

Expectations of earnings growth has been a major contributor to the rise of the S&P 500, which has gained 8.5 per cent since its February low. Market strategist Ed Yardeni notes that US corporate tax cuts in late 2017 have been the major driver of earnings growth. Analysts forecast earnings growth of 22.3 per cent in 2018 and 9.9 per cent in 2019. However, some analysts warn that earnings growth could come under pressure in the second half of 2018, due to factors such as the trade war with China and the rising US dollar.

Comcast’s proposed bid for the entertainment assets of 21st Century Fox is more likely to proceed after a US court approved AT&T’s deal to acquire Time Warner. Shares in Fox have rallied amid expectations that Comcast will trump Walt Disney Company’s $US52bn offer for the bulk of Fox’s assets. Media analyst Craig Moffett says the AT&T-Time Warner merger is likely to prompt further consolidation in the media sector.

US-based Newmont Mining Corporation has indicated that it could seek to gain full ownership of the Super Pit gold mine in Western Australia. Barrick Gold recently flagged the possible sale of its 50 per cent stake in the massive mine. Newmont CEO Gary Goldberg has stressed that organic growth rather than acquisitions remains the big miner’s primary focus, but adds that its knowledge of the Super Pit could make it an exception. He notes that Newmont acquired the Cripple Creek & Victor mine in 2015 at a time when the gold price was lower.

The Sydney Morning Herald – Page: 24 : 20-Apr-16

Netflix has forecast that it will gain an additional two million subscribers in non-US markets during the June 2016 quarter. The group had added 2.4 million subscribers in international markets in the previous corresponding period. Netflix says it will be hard to match the surge in subscribers following its launch in Australia and New Zealand in 2015.
