Australian businessman Lloyd Williams is confident of winning a seventh Melbourne Cup with Irish horse "Yucatan". Williams is a co-owner of the Cup favourite, whose other owners include fellow entrepreneurs Brian Singer, Alan Green and Gerry Ryan. Williams is also the co-owner of another Melbourne Cup contender, "The Cliffs of Moher". Horses owned by Williams won the Melbourne Cup in 2016 and 2017.

Palmer shares his big coal dream

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says the state does not need another coal-fired power station. She was commenting on the announcement by businessman Clive Palmer that he intends to build a $1.5 billion low-emissions coal-fired power station in the Galilee Basin. The proposed station would be located on Palmer’s Waratah Coal tenements, and would be the first coal-fired power stations built in decades if Palmer’s plans come to fruition.

Fortescue delivers payday to Forrest

Fortescue Metals Group chairman and founder Andrew Forrest will be paid a total of $239m in dividend payments for the 2017-18 financial year. Forrest has received total franked dividend payments of $1.3bn before tax since 2011, with the bulk of these dividends being invested in his philanthropic organisation, the Minderoo Foundation. His 33.36 per cent stake in Fortescue is worth $4.33bn, based on the stock’s closing price of $4.26 on 20 August.

Forrest joins Bishop in China media attack

Fortescue Metals Group has exported more than one billion tonnes of iron ore since its inaugural shipment to a Chinese customer in May 2008. Fortescue founder Andrew Forrest has marked the 10th anniversary by criticising the Australian media’s coverage of China. He was especially scathing of the print media’s on the negative aspects of Australia’s relationship with China. Meanwhile, Forrest said Fortescue is progressing with its expansion into South America, as well as plans to diversify into other minerals.

Crown execs support Packer exit

Shares in Crown Resorts closed almost one per cent lower at $A12.95 on 21 March, after major shareholder James Packer resigned from the board for personal reasons. Packer’s private company, Consolidated Press Holding, subsequently attributed his resignation to mental health issues. Crown Resorts has been under scrutiny in recent years over a series of scandals, including allegations that it had tampered with poker machines at Crown Melbourne and the arrest of Crown employees in China in 2016.

Price doubts over Forrest LNG plan

BlueScope CEO Mark Vasella is supportive of plans by a venture backed by Andrew Forrest to import LNG into the New South Wales market. Port Kembla is one of three sites envisaged for the project, and Vasella says this would be the best choice, as it is close to customers and infrastructure. Energy Users Association of Australia head Andrew Richards has also welcomed news of the project, while a spokesperson for AGL, which is considering a similar import project in Victoria, said it backs the idea of new supply.

Twiggy, Japan Inc plan to ship LNG to NSW

Billionaire iron ore miner Andrew Forrest is believed to be the dominant partner in a new venture, Australian Industrial Energy. AIE, in which Japanese trading companies Marubeni and JERA are also involved, is planning to transport LNG to a yet-to-be decided port in New South Wales, where a re-gasification terminal would be established. It is understood that the volume of gas that the terminal would be capable of delivering is equivalent to about 70 per cent of total NSW demand.

M&A talk as Gordon lifts Prime interest

Sources have indicated that WIN Corporation owner Bruce Gordon has increased his stake in Prime Media Group from 14.99 per cent to 24 per cent. The transaction, which is believed to have been carried out via cash-settled equity swaps, has prompted speculation that Gordon could seek to merge the two regional TV broadcasters in the wake of cross-media ownership reforms. Meanwhile, Perpetual has reduced its stake in Prime from 13.1 per cent to 7.4 per cent.

Meet the new Qantas chairman

Richard Goyder will be stepping down as CEO of Wesfarmers in the week commencing 13 November, and will be joining the board of Qantas Airways in the same week. There is every expectation that Goyder will become the next Qantas chairman, with incumbent Leigh Clifford likely to step aside towards the end of 2018. Goyder is already the chairman of the Australian Football League Commission, and is due to take over as chairman of Woodside Petroleum in April 2018.

Kinghorn facing jail over $30m tax fraud

RAMS Home Loans founder John Kinghorn has pleaded not guilty after being charged with two counts of tax fraud. The Australian Federal Police will allege that Kinghorn avoided tax liabilities totalling $A30m after claiming that he did not control any companies that were registered in the Jersey Islands. He could be sentenced to up to 10 years in jail if he is convicted. Kinghorn gained $A650m from the sale of an 80 per cent stake in RAMS via an IPO in 2007.
