New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian will announce on 18 September that her government plans to ban cash donations of more than $100 to political parties. There are suggestions the donation ban is designed to draw attention away from the problems that Berejiklian is having with some Liberal MPs over abortion laws, as well as the decision by Sports, Multiculturalism, Seniors and Veterans Minister John Sidoti to stand down while he is being investigated by the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption over property investments near new rail lines.

Federal Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese has criticised the culture of Labor’s New South Wales branch in the wake of the scandal over a $100,000 cash donation from a Chinese property developer. He says there are clearly accountability issues within NSW Labor and has called for a review into how the scandal occurred. However, Albanese has rejected a proposal to relocate NSW Labor’s head office, which is currently close to Sydney’s Chinatown precinct. Meanwhile, there is speculation that suspended NSW Labor secretary Kaila Murnain could potentially face criminal charges over her role in the scandal.

New South Wales Labor leader Jodi McKay says Kaila Murnain will not return to her role as the party’s general secretary following her suspension on 28 August. McKay adds that she cannot understand how the scandal over a $100,000 cash donation to NSW Labor was allowed to ‘fester’ for so long. She also says Labor is unlikely to win office in the state until it regains the trust of voters. Federal Labor leader Anthony Albanese has declined to comment on the donations scandal in NSW.

Labor’s New South Wales branch has suspended its general secretary, Kaila Murnain, as the scandal over political donations from a Chinese property developer deepens. Murnain appeared before the Independent Commission Against Corruption on 28 August, where she admitted that she had been aware of the illegal donation in September 2016 but had remained silent about it on the advice of Labor’s lawyer Ian Robertson. Labor’s NSW parliamentary leader Jodi McKay says she immediately took action to have Murnain suspended.

The Independent Commission Against Corruption raided the Sydney headquarter of Labor’s New South Wales branch on 18 December. The raid is believed to relate to a Chinese Friends of Labor fundraising dinner that was held prior to the 2015 state election. Several federal Labor MPs were at the function, including Opposition Leader Bill Shorten. Chinese property developer Huang Xiangmo was also present at the dinner. He later attracted scrutiny over his links to former Labor senator Sam Dastyari. Property developers were banned from making donations to NSW political parties at the time of the dinner.
