Market Research Update – Page: Online : 2-Aug-23

The latest research from Roy Morgan shows that 14.6 million Australians aged 14+ (68.0%) would like to spend at least one night in the next two years at a domestic holiday destination. Melbourne has regained top spot as the preferred holiday destination, with 2,797,000 Australians aged 14+ expressing a preference to stay at least one night in the Victorian capital on a trip in the next two years. The city was clearly the preferred holiday destination for Australians in the pre-pandemic period, and with the removal of the final mandatory isolation policies early in the December 2022 quarter, the city has moved back into top spot. Almost 2.3 million of those mentioning a trip to Melbourne are coming from interstate locations – a higher number of interstate visitors than any other destination – while a further 500,000 Victorians also said they would like to spend at least a night in their capital city in the next two years. The Gold Coast has retained second place, with 2,728,000 Australians mentioning travelling to the city in the next two years. Right behind in third is Sydney with 2,727,000 Australians now expressing a preference to travel to the harbour city in the next two years.

Exodus from Australian cities as coronavirus pushes people to the regions

Original article by Benedict Brook
News.com.au – Page: Online : 30-Oct-20

The pandemic is expected to see an increase in the trend of people moving away from the big cities, which could see a big fall in their populations. Nerida Conisbee from property website REA Group says people that have gone through lockdown are looking for somewhere to live with more space, while Griffith University urban planner Tony Matthews says that while previously people wanting to move away from capital cities were looking for somewhere with a train line, good broadband connection is now the most important piece of infrastructure. Research by Roy Morgan and Uber has found that no capital city CBD has returned to pre-COVID levels of movement, with Adelaide being the closest at 78 per cent.

Plan now or quality of city life will fall

Original article by Simon Benson
The Australian – Page: 1 & 4 : 23-Feb-18

Infrastructure Australia contends that governments need to start planning for what it claims will be a population increase of 12 million over the next 30 years. Much of this growth is expected to occur in major capital cities such as Sydney and Melbourne, but Infrastructure Australia warns that the quality of life in large cities will suffer if planning does not start now on infrastructure issues such as the adoption of user-pays road systems and the development of large "timetable-free" public transport networks.

Sydney’s superstar house prices explained

Original article by Vesna Poljak
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 13 : 23-Nov-17

Reserve Bank governor Philip Lowe says there are certain cities whose house prices increase a lot more than other cities in their countries. Lowe says this trend has been observed by his colleagues at other central banks, and the general consensus is that people are willing to pay higher prices for houses in some cities because of increased "economic or social returns" to be gained by living in them . Such places have been dubbed "superstar" cities, and Lowe says they include cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Vancouver, Toronto, and San Francisco

Australia’s internet affordability improves, but big gaps remain between capital city residents and the rest

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 22-Feb-17

The Australian Digital Inclusion Index, which is powered by Roy Morgan Research’s Single Source survey, includes three key elements: internet Access, Ability and Affordability. Nationally, Australia scored 52.1 on Affordability in the 12 months to September 2016 (up from 51.2 in March, but still below the level of 53.5 in 2014). However, a clear divide exists between capital cities and the rest of the country. Overall, Australia’s State capitals together scored 54.6, compared with 47.5 for the 36 per cent of the population living outside those six cities. Overall, capitals average 6.5 points higher for Affordability than the rest of their State – and the larger the State, the larger the divide. Sydney is the most affordable place in Australia for internet with a score of 57.3 – almost 10 points higher than the rest of NSW (47.5).

City-dwellers travelling to interstate capitals over destinations just out of town

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 12-Oct-15

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 10 per cent of Australians aged 14+ visited Melbourne in the year to June 2015, ahead of Sydney (8.4 per cent), the Gold Coast (6.5 per cent) and Brisbane (5.3 per cent). The survey also shows that most of the top holiday destination for urbanites are regions that are nearby. However, even city-dwellers sometimes want to enjoy another city on holidays: Sydney and Melbourne, in fact, are each among the top five domestic travel destinations for all capital city residents around the country – and in some cases are actually more popular than areas only a short drive away.
