Call for suburbs to grow up, not out

Changes must be made to zoning rules for established suburban areas in Melbourne. Victorian Planning Minister Richard Wynne has announced a review of rezoning decisions made by predecessor Matthew Guy, but he must proceed cautiously because of possible opposition from municipal councils. Leonard Teplin of real estate agency Marshall White says denser residential development is needed in suburbs to accommodate population growth.

Minister’s backflip spares Whitlam house

Victorian Planning Minister Matthew Guy has intervened to prevent the demolition of "Ngara". The house in Kew is the birthplace of former prime minister Gough Whitlam. The Heritage Council has granted Guy’s request for an interim protection order, which will prevent the current owner of the historic home from carrying out further demolition work. Guy stepped in after a furore erupted over plans to demolish the home
