National Party leader Michael McCormack has downplayed concerns about a potential leadership challenge amid growing tensions within the Coalition regarding energy policy. Former Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce has raised the prospect of ending the alliance with the Liberal Party after Prime Minister Scott Morrison ruled out federal government funding for new coal-fired power stations in Queensland. McCormack has rejected suggestions of a "coal war" within the Coalition.

Strategy will shut four coal plants

Minerals Council of Australia CEO Tania Constable says Labor must explain how it will guarantee a reliable base-load power supply under its policy of a renewable energy target of 50 per cent by 2030. She has warned that the policy could force four coal-fired power stations in Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland to be shut down well before the 2030 target date, in addition to the Liddell plant in NSW. She adds that this would result in a big rise in electricity prices.

Barnaby’s coal plan powers up detractors

National Party MP Keith Pitt has questioned the viability of the federal government’s Snowy Hydro expansion plan. He argues that investing in coal-fired power stations may be a better option if Snowy 2.0’s cost per megawatt hour is very high. The issue of energy policy has come under renewed scrutiny after former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce advocated coal-fired power in preference to Snowy 2.0. However, the University of Queensland’s Professor Tor Hundloe says pumped hydro is much more cost-effective than coal-fired power generation.

Sources have indicated that the federal government’s new energy policy may include assistance for companies to upgrade existing coal-fired power stations. Energy Minister Angus Taylor has stressed that ensuring the reliability of Australia’s baseload power supply is the government’s key priority. This could potentially include measures aimed at extending the operating lives of existing coal-fired plants or investing in new ones.

Power firm eyeing coal plant deal

Former prime minister Tony Abbott says it is by no means certain that the Coalition’s joint party room meeting will endorse the national energy guarantee on 14 August. He says it would be "appalling" if the NEG is approved, warning that it could result in Australia’s "de-industrialisation". Meanwhile, Delta Electricity chairman Trevor St Baker says the company will build a new high-efficiency, low-emissions coal-fired power station if the NEG is endorsed by Coalition MPs. This could be a replacement for the Hazelwood power station in Victoria or a new one at the site of its Vales Point power station in New South Wales.

Keep coal burning for long term

The Australian Energy Market Operator has urged against the premature closure of coal-fired power stations, saying they should remain operating for as long as possible before being replaced by renewable energy sources. AEMO stated that this will ensure stability in the national energy market, as well as providing energy at low cost. AEMO notes that 30 per cent of the NEM’s current coal resources are due to reach the end of their technical life within the next two decades. The federal government will try to convince the states and territories to adopt its National Energy Guarantee at a meeting of the Council of Australian Governments’ energy council in August.

Renewables rush a risk to industry

Large electricity users are concerned about the impact of the Federal Government’s national energy guarantee on baseload power supply. Tomago Aluminium CEO Matt Howell argues that some industrial users require competitively priced baseload power around the clock, which renewables cannot guarantee without reliable storage technology. Resources Minister Matt Canavan says coal is still the best option for supplying cheap and reliable baseload power, and he warns that coal would no longer be competitive under Labor’s carbon emissions policy.

Abbott blasts Turnbull’s anti-coal chiefs

Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg has dismissed calls for the Federal Government to acquire the Liddell power station after AGL Energy formally rejected Alinta Energy’s offer to buy it. Coalition backbenchers Tony Abbott and Barnaby Joyce said the government should compulsorily acquire Liddell, with the former saying it should then be on-sold to Alinta. Abbott has also accused senior government bureaucrats of having an anti-coal bias. He argues that coal remains the lowest-cost option for baseload power.

NEG to help extend life of coal power

Original article by Mark Ludlow

Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg believes that the federal government’s proposed National Energy Guarantee will encourage investment in existing coal-fired power stations, thus enabling them to remain operating longer than under alternative energy policies. He has tasked the Australian Energy Market Operator with conducting an audit of Australia’s newer coal-fired power stations, while pro-coal businessman Trevor St Baker is of the view that energy companies must obtain permission from the federal government before closing down any coal-fired power stations.

MCA cedes ground to BHP over climate

Original article by Peter Ker

BHP Billiton may back down on its threat to withdraw from the Minerals Council of Australia after the lobby group released its revised climate policy. The MCA has been criticised by BHP for advocating coal-fired power generation, but its revised policy adopts a similar position to BHP regarding a "technology-neutral approach" to low-emission energy sources. Rio Tinto in turn has welcomed the MCA’s new policy stance and urged shareholders to reject resolutions to be put before its upcoming AGM by the Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility.
