Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has expressed the importance of affordable and reliable baseload power in a clean energy target. The CET model that was recommended by Chief Scientist Alan Finkel did not designate clean coal as a clean energy source, but National Party leader Barnaby Joyce has indicated that the Government’s energy policy will include coal-fired power generation.

Whitehaven Coal CEO Paul Flynn says Professor Alan Finkel’s predictions concerning the reduced cost of generating electricity from renewable energy sources are ambitious. Flynn, also used a speech at a Brisbane Mining Club function to lambast firms such as AGL Energy for promoting their commitment to renewable energy in their advertising, while noting that they will still be earning profits from electricity generated from coal-fired power stations for some years to come.

Federal Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg says the Australian Labor Party has changed its stance on energy policy more than 10 times over the last decade. He has criticised the Opposition for adopting a policy of sourcing 50 per cent of Australia’s energy supply from renewable sources by 2030 when it had provided owners of coal-fired power stations with millions of dollars worth of taxpayers’ funds when it was in government. Labor had also given some $A268m worth of free carbon permits to the owners of the Hazelwood power station in Victoria.

Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global exited the share register of Whitehaven Coal in 2014, following a government directive to terminate its exposure to the coal sector. The Norwegian Government now wants the sovereign wealth fund to divest shares in electricity companies that have a high exposure to coal-fired generation and mining companies whose revenues are heavily weighted toward thermal coal. This could force it to offload shares in AGL Energy and New Hope Corporation.

Wind farms ‘to yield job losses’

Original article by Adam Creighton

Jeff Dimery, CEO of gas and coal power generation plants operator Alinta Energy, has urged the Australian Government to lower the renewable energy target (RET). He argued that the wind farms being built across the nation with funding linked to the RET were outdated technology, and that a more useful area of investment would be batteries that mean households with solar roof panels can store the electricity they create. Dimery also forecast widespread redundancies at coal mines in Victoria and New South Wales under the RET. It is being reviewed for the Federal Government by business leader Dick Warburton
