The Environment Council of Central Queensland has launched legal action against Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek in the Federal Court. The Council is asking the court to review Plibersek’s decision not to take global warming into account when assessing Mach Energy’s application to expand its Mount Pleasant open-cut coal mine and Whitehaven Coal’s application to expand its Narrabri underground mine; both mines are in NSW. The Council is being represented in court by Environmental Justice Australia, with senior lawyer Retta Berryman saying if the judicial review is successful it could compel all coal and gas projects to be assessed for climate change impacts.

Adani Ports chief bullish on future of Australian coal

Original article by Matthew Cranston
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 9 : 15-Nov-19

Adani Port’s CEO Karan Adani says its port operations will be carbon neutral by 2025. Adani’s controversial Carmichael coal mine in Queensland is due to commence shipping 200,000 tonnes of coal a week to India in 2021. India is tipped to overtake China as the largest importer of coal in the mid 2020s. Karan Adani views climate change as an important issue, but he notes that millions of Indians are still burning kerosene and wood. Coal remains the least expensive and most reliable source of electricity in India, while the nation’s former power secretary Ram Vinay Shahi notes that 300 million Indians do not have a reliable source of energy.

Stop demonising us, says Adani chief

Original article by Mark Ludlow

Adani Mining CEO Lucas Dow has called for the "demonisation" of its controversial Carmichael coal mining project in Queensland to end. Adani announced in the week ending 30 November that the project will finally go ahead, albeit on a much reduced scale, and that it will be self-funded. Dow says Adani accepts that some people are against the Carmichael project, but the debate about it proceeding or not should be based around facts, not "myths, half-truths and deceptions". He says Adani is sick of being used as a "political football".

Critics won’t stop Carmichael coal mine: Adani Australia boss Jeyakumar Janakaraj

Original article by Mark Ludlow
The Australian Financial Review – Page: Online : 12-Mar-18

Adani Australia CEO Jeyakumar Janakaraj has attacked the amount of misinformation being spread by opponents of its proposed $A16.5 billion Carmichael coal mine. He notes that the mine has already secured over 100 approvals, and that Australia’s investment reputation would be at risk if a future government scrapped a project that had already secured appropriate government approvals. Janakaraj noted that forecast strong global energy demand over the next two decades made the Carmichael mine an economically viable project.

Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign chairman John Podesta was paid $US7,000 a month by the Sandler Foundation, starting from February 2016. Documents released by WikiLeaks show that Podesta received the payments for his advice on Adani’s coal project in Queensland. The leaked information validates the Australian Government’s claims that foreign-funded groups were involved in the protest against the Adani project.

The Australian Government has flagged action to crack down on environmental activists’ use of the court system to block resources projects. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has raised the possibility of reviving legislation aimed at curbing vexatious litigation by environmental groups. The mooted crackdown follows warnings from India’s Power Minister Piyush Goyal that opposition to Adani’s Carmichael coal mine could affect his nation’s future investment in Australia. The campaign against Carmichael has received funding from at least one US organisation that has links to John Podesta, who is heading the presidential election campaign of Hillary Clinton.

India’s Power Minister Piyush Goyal has warned that the long-running opposition to Adani’s proposed Carmichael coal mine in Queensland could affect his nation’s future investment in Australia. Goyal added that Indian could source coal from countries such as South Africa and Indonesia if investing in Australian projects becomes too difficult. Recent media reports revealed that a leading Australian anti-coal group, the Sunrise Project, has been funded by US-based foundations. Documents released by Wikileaks also show that at least one of these foundations has links to John Podesta, who is heading the presidential election campaign of Hillary Clinton.

Coalition warms to nuclear

Original article by Laura Tingle
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 4 : 28-Oct-15

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has responded to calls for a moratorium on coal exports and new coal mines by arguing that doing so would actually increase carbon emissions. He notes that Australian coal tends to be much cleaner than that of other countries. Meanwhile, the Federal Government’s submission to the Nuclear Royal Commission in South Australia presses the case for considering nuclear power as part of the nation’s future energy mix.
