Queensland’s Deputy Premier Jackie Trad says it is time that Adani made a commitment to develop the $A16.5 billion Carmichael coal mine. Trad reiterated previous comments that the Carmichael project needs to be viable in its own right, a view echoed by federal Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese. Trad’s comments followed the revelation that Adani had backtracked on making March the deadline for deciding whether to make a financial commitment to the project.

Adani still getting special royalty deal

Queensland’s Deputy Premier Jackie Trad says Adani’s proposed Carmichael coal mine would be entitled to defer royalty payments for four years if the project proceeds. The State Government approved the royalty scheme in May 2017, which will also apply to other resources projects in the Galilee Basin. Trad has rejected suggestions that Adani has been given a "royalty holiday", arguing that interest will be payable on the deferred payments. Meanwhile, the state’s Department of Environment & Science has rejected New Hope Group’s amended environmental authority for a proposed expansion of its New Acland coal mine.

Glencore ends $700pw strike bonus

Original article by James Thomson
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 3 : 31-Jan-18

Glencore will seek to terminate the enterprise agreement at its Oaky Creek coal mine in Queensland in a bid to end a long-running union dispute. Some 175 union members have been locked out of the site for more than 200 days, but a clause in the enterprise agreement requires them to receive the productivity bonuses that are paid to employees and contractors who have defied the picket line. It is believed that some picketers have been paid up to $A700m per week in productivity bonuses.

Just build it, Palaszczuk tells Adani

Original article by Mark Ludlow
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 10 : 22-Nov-17

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has urged Adani to just commence work on its $A16.5 billion Carmichael coal mine, rather than wait for any possible federal assistance. Speaking during campaigning for the Queensland election, Palaszczuk noted Adani had received all relevant approvals for the mine. Palaszczuk has recently vetoed a federal government loan that would assist Adani with the Carmichael project, but she does not think that will hurt Labor’s chances of winning the election, which will be held on 25 November

The Queensland Government continues to attract scrutiny over its dealings with India-based Adani regarding its $A16.5bn Carmichael coal and rail project. The Government struck a deal with Adani in May to defer some royalties payments, but it has refused to disclose any details of the deal. However, the Australian Labor Party had stated in 2015 that it would not make any "secret deals" if it won the state election.

Liberal-National Party leader Tim Nicholls says a number of senior Queensland Government ministers oppose Adani’s proposed Carmichael coal mine, while even Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has been reluctant to support it. Nicholls adds that his party fully supports the $A16.5bn project. The Opposition also supports the construction of a clean-coal power station in North Queensland, and has questioned the Government’s failure to release a report which found that it would be financially viable.

Adani says Australia to get taxes despite haven

Original article by Peter Ker
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 25 : 2-Nov-17

Adani executive Muthuraj Guruswamy has confirmed that its companies that are registered in Australia are controlled by entities that are based in tax havens. However, he has stressed that Adani will pay its full tax liabilities and mining royalties in Australia. Guruswamy also indicated that Adani has started building the infrastructure for its Carmichael coal mine, which is slated to commence production in 2020. Anti-coal protestors attempted to disrupt his speech at the International Mining and Resources Conference on 1 November.

Canavan crisis is bad for Adani

Original article by Matthew Stevens
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 26 : 27-Jul-17

Matt Canavan’s decision to step aside as Resources Minister over dual citizenship concerns could have implications for Adani’s proposed Carmichael coal mine. Canavan is a keen advocate of both coal and the Carmichael project, and he is highly likely to have approved a federal loan to Adani via the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility. A final investment decision on the first stage of the Carmichael project is conditional on NAIF funding for the rail line component of the project. The question of whether the Australian Domestic Gas Security Mechanism will be triggered in 2018 is also uncertain after Canavan stood aside.

Adani coal bid clears native title hurdle

Original article by Andrew Tillett
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 9 : 15-Jun-17

The Senate has passed amendments to the Native Title Act to overturn the Federal Court’s decision in the McGlade case. The court had ruled that an indigenous land use agreement would not be valid unless it was signed by every registered native title claimant, rather than just a majority of traditional owners. The McGlade ruling had major implications for Adani’s proposed Carmichael coal mine in Queensland. Some traditional owners oppose the project and intend to press ahead with legal action in a bid to stop it from proceeding.
