Unions NSW secretary Mark Morey says the termination of enterprise bargaining agreements is one of the greatest drags on wage growth in Australia. Unions NSW will push for a policy change at Labor’s state conference in October which would ban future Labor governments from terminating workplace agreements during bargaining. Rail unions have accused the state government of repeatedly threatening to terminate Sydney Trains’ enterprise during protracted negotiations over a new pay deal.

South32-run Port Kembla locks out union over rolling stoppages

Members of the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining & Energy Union were denied access to the Port Kembla Coal Terminal on 18 February, amid growing tensions over negotiations for a new enterprise bargaining agreement. The lockout will remain in force until 27 February, and coal will be loaded onto ships using contractors. South32, which partly owns the coal terminal, is currently engaged in conciliation talks regarding a separate EBA for workers at its New South Wales mines.

Patrick braces for illegal seven-day strike at Port Botany

Stevedoring firm Patrick will ask the Fair Work Commission to block Maritime Union of Australia members from taking unlawful industrial action at its Port Botany facility in Sydney. The MUA proposes a seven-day strike over negotiations for a new enterprise bargaining agreement with Kalmar, which provides crane maintenance services for Patrick. The union imposed work bans on the weekend of 14-15 April in response to Kalmar’s move to deploy contractors to replace staff who were on sick leave.
