The Shop, Distributive & Allied Employees’ Association has backed a proposal to enshrine the right to a four-day working week in a new enterprise agreement for Woolworths employees. The proposed deal would allow full-time staff to compress their 38-hour working week into four shifts comprising 9.5 hours each. Bernie Smith from the SDA says staff who opt for a four-day week would be required to work up to four weekend shifts over a four-week period. The enterprise agreement will cover about 130,000 workers, who will vote on the proposed deal in coming weeks.

Coles abandons enterprise bargaining for staff at its stores

The existing enterprise agreement for workers in Coles stores expired more than 14 months ago, but the retail giant has refused to negotiate a new deal with unions. The Fair Work Act prohibits workers from taking protected industrial action if their employer refuses to engage in enterprise bargaining. The full bench of the Fair Work Commission recently rejected an application by the Retail & Fast Food Workers’ Union for a majority support determination based on its petition of 2,000 Coles employees. The union plans to take Coles to the Federal Court to force it to the negotiating table. Coles still negotiates agreements with its distribution centres, which are heavily unionised.

The Fair Work Commission has approved a new four-year enterprise agreement for more than 100,000 employees of supermarkets group Woolworths. The deal has been welcomed by the Shop, Distributive & Allied Employees’ Association, although the rival Retail & Fast Food Workers Union had opposed some aspects of the new agreement.

End to Godfreys deal paying $160 too little

The Fair Work Commission has terminated an enterprise agreement for employees of vacuum cleaner retailer Godfreys that has been in place since 2009. The non-union agreement included wage rates that were $160 per week lower than the award minimum, while casual loadings were also well below the award rate. Godfreys argued that employees could be paid more than the award rate when commissions are taken into account. The enterprise agreement had expired in 2012.

The take-home pay of current Woolworths employees will not be affected by a new enterprise bargaining agreement that has been struck with the Shop, Distributive & Allied Employees’ Association. Employees will receive the full penalty rates and casual loading rates of the retail industry award, although "loaded" base rates will be reduced. The new EBA also includes an employee bonus of up to $1,100 dollars. Retail & Fast Food Workers Union secretary Josh Cullinan claims that Woolworths employees are collectively owed about $1bn under the previous EBA.

The Shop Distributive & Allied Employees’ Association has negotiated a new enterprise agreement with grocery giant Coles that includes higher penalty rates for staff who work at night and on weekends. The deal includes an annual pay rise for all employees, and a one-off payment to ensure that their take-home pay is not adversely affected by the new wage deal. Coles workers will vote on the proposed enterprise agreement in mid-February. Coles and the SDA have been negotiating a new deal for about 12 months.

Pizza Hut must pay weekend penalties

The Fair Work Commission ruled on 29 September that the national workplace agreement between Pizza Hut and the Shop Distributive & Allied Employees Association be terminated. The termination was made at the request of the SDA, but both it and Pizza Hut were not aware of the decision when asked for comment. The decision means Pizza Hut workers revert to the relevant award. As a result, their normal hourly rates will be reduced, but they will now receive full weekend and evening penalty rates.

Minimum-wage sting in Coles penalties deal

The Australian – Page: 1 & 4 : 19-Sep-17

A draft enterprise agreement between Coles and the Shop, Distributive & Allied Employees’ Association is intended to guarantee that all employees will be paid more than the award rate for the retail industry. If the deal is approved, permanent employees who work at night and on weekends will receive award-level penalty rates, as well as the full $A22.10-per-week increase in the minimum wage. However, employees who work solely on weekdays and are now paid above-award rates will receive only 50 per cent of the minimum wage rise.

Pay shake-up looms for nation’s retailers

Original article by Robert Gottliebsen

The majority of large Australian retailers have union-endorsed enterprise agreements, but grocery giant Coles is widely tipped to abandon its disputed workplace agreement in favour of the industrial award system, a move that is likely to be followed by other retailers. Coles employees who are on weekend shifts would receive a pay rise, although staff who only work on weekdays would face a pay cut unless Coles implements a "grandfathering" arrangement for existing employees. About 300,000 employees of large retailers would be affected if the awards system is widely adopted, as well as potentially a further 100,000 fast-food workers.

Coles ends bargaining over weekend rates

Original article by David Marin-Guzman
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 4 : 5-Jul-17

Grocery retailer Coles has opened negotiations with unions for a new two-year enterprise bargaining agreement. Coles has indicated that the new EBA will be based on the minimum employment conditions in the relevant industrial award. The Fair Work Commission terminated the existing EBA in 2016, as it included lower weekend penalty rates in return for higher base pay rates. Coles has advised that all employees will be paid at least the award rate at all times under the new EBA.
