Launched in April, the federal government’s $50 million Public Interest News Gathering fund aims to support high quality news in rural Australia. The fund has announced that it is offering financial assistance to five television stations, 13 radio stations and 92 newspapers, with major media companies Australian Community Media and Seven West Media among those to receive assistance. Country Press Australia president Bruce Ellen claims small regional publishers did not get overly much in the way of money from the fund. Noting the federal government gave regional airlines $300 million, he questions whether the government values independent and local journalism

Boycott grows over judgment by activist

Herald & Weekly Times MD Peter Blunden has advised that its newspapers will boycott all Australian Press Council rulings in which new board member Carla McGrath participates. The boycott was initiated by HWT parent News Corp Australia in response to the appointment of McGrath, who also chairs political activist group GetUp. Community Newspapers of Australia has indicated that it may also boycott APC rulings.

Australian Community Newspaper Readership results

The latest Roy Morgan Community Newspaper Readership results, for the 24 months to September 2016, show that readership of community newspapers in all mainland capital cities has declined, but many titles are bucking the trend and finding new local readers. The "St George & Sutherland Shire Leader" extended its lead as the most-read community paper in Sydney, with 220,000 readers per average issue (up 15.8 per cent year-on-year in the 12 months to September 2016. The "Melton Leader" was Melbourne’s fastest-growing community title (up 47.8 per cent to 34,000) prior to its closure in June, while readership of Brisbane’s "South-West News", including its specially-badged "Springfield News" edition, grew 12.5 per cent to 54,000 readers per average weekly issue.

Community spirit still strong for newspapers

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that total readership of News Corp Australia’s community newspapers rose by just under one per cent to 5,062,000 in the 24 months to March 2015. Fairfax Media’s community publications maintained a combined reach of just over a million across New South Wales and Victoria, down 2.8 per cent compared with the 24 months to March 2014. The latest Roy Morgan Community Newspaper Readership results also show that the "St George & Sutherland Shire Leader" remains the most-read community paper in NSW, with an average of 194,000 readers per issue, and the "Waverley/Oakleigh Monash Leader" is now the most-read community paper in Victoria.
