New figures from Nielsen suggest that international online portals are having problems with attracting Australian readers. Nielsen’s "Ratings by Unique Audience" report for July 2015 shows that "The Guardian" managed to increase its year-on-year unique audience by only two per cent. "The Daily Telegraph" and BBC increased their audiences by 3.8 per cent and four per cent respectively. Figures compiled by "The Australian" show that comprehensive paywall sites are more successful in growing their audiences, with "The Australian" recording a 10.6 per cent rise in unique visitors in the past 12 months.

Aldi’s expansion will increase price competition and cut into the market share of supermarket giants Woolworths and Coles and Metcash’s IGA chain. The supermarkets are also likely to be squeezed at the top end of the market when David Jones revamps its food halls and opens stand-alone upmarket food stores. Moody’s says the twin-pronged attack by Aldi and David Jones will shake up the duopoly structure of Australia’s grocery market.

Australians have responded enthusiastically to the offer of US streaming service Netflix. The service was launched locally six months ago. Citi estimates that Netflix has now 1.6 million subscribers in Australia. Pay TV operator Foxtel and free-to-air TV channels have a formidable competitor. Investors will no doubt watch with interest the contest between traditional TV broadcasters and streaming services.

New data shows that there was 2.9 per cent growth in Australian supermarket and grocery store sales in June 2015. This is the lowest rate of growth since September 2013, which is primarily due to price discounting in the sector. Meanwhile, growth in total food and liquor sales slowed to 2.7 per cent in June. Woolworths is seeking to counter stronger sales growth at Coles by reducing grocery prices, while Metcash has launched a price-matching initiative for independent grocery retailers that operate under its IGA banner.

Australian-listed Echo Entertainment Group has signalled that its new casino in Brisbane will aim to derive a significant proportion of its revenue from Asian high-rollers. CEO Matt Bekier notes that high-rollers account for about 30 per cent of revenue at The Star casino in Sydney, and the new gaming venue will seek to emulate this. The $A2bn casino at Queen’s Wharf is slated to open in 2022, and will compete with The Star and Crown Resorts’ gaming venues for high-roller patronage.
