Retailers locked out of Apple Watch deals

Telsyte MD Foad Fadaghi estimates that about 300,000 Apple Watches could be sold in just one week. The product will be available to pre-order in Australia from 10 April 2015, and it will be sold exclusively in Apple stores and via the Apple website from 24 April. However, it is uncertain as to when or if other retailers will stock the smartwatch

Apple revenue drops during ATO talks

Global technology firm Apple is one of eight such businesses accused of using overseas tax havens to engage in base erosion and profit shifting, substantially reducing its tax liabilities in Australia. A Singaporean holding company received $A2bn worth of the profits from Australia in 2014, before passing them on to an entity registered in Ireland. Sales were down 1% at $A5.86bn, but Apple paid a mere $A80.4m in local tax that at least was higher than the $A36.4m for 2013. Its practices are also attracting scrutiny by the European Commission

Prof Woz signs on to UTS bot camp

Mary-Anne Williams, director of the Innovation & Enterprise Research Lab at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), has announced the appointment as adjunct professor of Steve Wozniak. He co-founded the Apple computer company in the US, and will not receive any remuneration for what is his first such mentoring role globally. UTS deputy vice-chancellor research Glenn Wightwick says it is an indicator of the institution’s focus on innovation

iPad becomes Apple’s hard-to-take tablet

Apple’s iPad tablet computer is under competitive pressure as Samsung, Microsoft, Sony and Google are experiencing expanding sales of their products. Demand for iPads is so disappointing that Apple CEO Tim Cook decided not to include the device in a statement of quarterly sales for the three months to 28 June 2014. In contrast, sales of iPhones remain strong. The company sold 35 million iPhones in the second quarter of 2014, compared with 31.2 million in the previous corresponding period
