BHP has advised that its Pilbara iron ore production totalled 64 million tonnes in the September quarter, which is one per cent lower than the same period in 2024. The lower output has been attributed to repair work at its Port Hedland infrastructure, but BHP says it is still on track to achieve its full-year production guidance of between 258 million tonnes and 269 million tonnes for 2025-26. BHP expects global demand for iron ore to remain strong, despite expectations of slowing growth in China and the ongoing but yet-to-be confirmed reports that China has banned BHP’s iron ore imports. BHP’s copper production rose by four per cent year-on-year.

OZ Minerals CEO Andrew Cole intends to "take a break" after more than eight years at the helm of the copper and nickel miner, and he will not join BHP when the $9.6bn takeover is completed. BHP is paying $28.25 per share for OZ; the company’s shares were trading at around $3 when Cole was appointed CEO in late 2014. Cole is highly regarded within the resources sector, and some Newcrest Mining shareholders had called for him to be recruited to succeed Sandeep Biswas following the latter’s departure in December.

Copper and gold producer OZ Minerals has posted a 2019 interim net profit of $43.9m, which is 65 per cent lower than previously. The result was marred by factors such as a fall in the copper price, lower sales volumes and increased investment in exploration. OZ has ramped up investment in its Carrapateena mine, which is slated to commence production of copper concentrate in the final quarter of 2019. OZ shareholders will receive an interim dividend of $0.08 per share.

CFO Peter Beaven has told investors that BHP is unlikely to increase its Pilbara iron ore output to capitalise on reduced supply from Brazilian rival Vale. BHP will also maintain its current annual production target for metallurgical coal. Beaven also indicated that BHP will pursue growth in copper and nickel sulfide production in response to rising demand for electric vehicles and battery storage technology. He added that BHP may be open to nickel acquisitions, after dropping plans to divest its Nickel West division.

OZ Minerals has posted a 2018 net profit of $222.4m, which is 3.8 per cent lower than previously, although revenue was up 9.2 per cent at $1.12bn. Shareholders will receive a final dividend of $0.15 per share, but OZ has opted against paying a special dividend to finance growth projects such as the Carrapateena copper mine in South Australia. CEO Andrew Cole has also indicated that OZ will not proceed with a concentrate treatment plant in SA as it does not "stack up" at present.

OZ says copper won’t be hit by slowdown

Original article by Simon Evans

OZ Minerals CEO Andrew Cole is confident that strong demand for copper and the lack of major new discoveries means the copper price will ride out any downturn in the global economy. Meanwhile, production at OZ Minerals’ Carrapateena mine in South Australia is scheduled to begin in the final quarter of 2019, and Cole says it should reach full production within 18 months. He is also optimistic that the Prominent Hill mine’s will remain in production beyond 2030, when it is currently slated to close.

BHP Billiton’s production report for the September quarter shows that the resources giant has scaled back its forecast for copper output in 2018-19. BHP expects full-year production to be within the range of 1.62 million to 1.705 million tonnes, compared with previous guidance of 1.67 million to 1.77 million tonnes. The downgrade has been attributed to disruptions at the Olympic Dam mine in South Australia and the Spence project in Chile. Meanwhile, BHP’s iron ore shipments totalled 69.42 million tonnes during the quarter, and the company still expects Pilbara iron ore volumes of 273 million to 283 million tonnes for the full year.

RBA tips lithium, copper export boom

Original article by Perry Williams
The Australian – Page: 19 : 13-Aug-18

Australia accounts for 12 per cent of the world’s copper reserves, along with around 25 per cent of global lithium reserves. The Reserve Bank of Australia predicts that exports of these commodities will increase to meet rising demand for renewable energy generation and electric vehicles. The RBA forecasts that lithium exports will triple over the next five years. However, the outlook for iron ore is not so clear, with demand from Chinese steel makers viewed as being somewhat mixed.

OZ Minerals produced 54,597 tonnes of copper in the first half of 2018, putting it on track to achieve its full-year target of 100,000 to 110,000 tonnes. Gold output totalled 58,994 ounces, and OZ Minerals expects full-year output of 120,000 to 130,000 ounces. A review of OZ’s capital management strategy is nearly complete, and CEO Andrew Cole has stressed that shareholders will continue to receive regular dividend payments despite a big increase in expenditure on exploration and development.
