Rio Tinto has indicated that it is open to all potential options for its Winu copper project in Western Australia’s Paterson Province. However, selling a stake in Winu is said to be its preferred option; Winu boasts copper grades of 0.45 per cent, compared with 1.89 per cent at the Resolution project in the US, and Rio Tinto believes that Winu may be of a more suitable size and scale for a small or mid-tier miner. Newmont Corporation is also seeking a buyer for its Telfer gold and copper mine in the region.

Best ever platinum discovery

Original article by Peter Ker
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 25 : 10-Nov-21

Chalice Mining has released the first mineral resource estimate for its Gonneville deposit in Western Australia. The deposit contains gold, copper, nickel, cobalt, palladium and platinum; the latter two minerals are relatively scarce in Australia, and Chalice MD Alex Dorsch says Gonneville is the biggest discovery of platinum group elements in the nation’s history. The Gonneville deposit could potentially make Chalice a takeover target from global resources groups such as Anglo American, BHP or Rio Tinto.

Sandfire bets on new Botswana mine

Sandfire Resources will proceed with the development its T3 copper mine in Botswana, with production slated to commence in early 2023. Sandfire will initially produce about 30,000 ounces of a gold a year at T3, which could increase to at least 50,000 tonnes annually via the nearby A4 deposit. The T3 project will offset the looming loss of copper production from Sandfire’s ageing DeGrussa mine in Western Australia, which is nearing the end of its mine life. However, Sandfire plans to begin gold production at DeGrussa.

Rio Tinto is undertaking further drilling work at its Winu copper discovery in Western Australia’s Paterson Range. Arnaud Soirat, the head of Rio Tinto’s copper division, says the resources giant has identified other sites in the region that could also be drilled in the future. He adds that Rio Tinto’s focus is on value over volume, and that Winu could potentially be developed before the Resolution copper project in the US.

Rio Tinto has advised that drilling results from its Winu copper-gold discovery in Western Australia continue to show promise. However, Rio stated that it is not yet in a position to determine the possible size and quality of the mineralisation, or to give an estimate of a mineral resource. Winu is located in the Paterson Range, and Rio is investigating whether its acreage there is big enough to support a number of copper mines.

Rio Tinto predicts new copper mine will be built in Western Australia

Original article by Darren Gray
The Sydney Morning Herald – Page: Online : 9-Mar-19

Rio Tinto CEO Jean-Sebastien Jacques is confident a copper mine will be constructed at the site of its discovery in Western Australia’s Paterson Ranges. However, Jacques said he is unsure whether it will be Rio Tinto that builds that mine. Jacques was speaking at the official opening of its new $2.6 billion Arum bauxite mine on Cape York. Jacques said much more drilling needs to be undertaken at its copper discovery in WA to determine what lies beneath the surface.

UK gold miner eyes dual listing

London-listed Greatland Gold has indicated that it is considering the option of a dual listing on the Australian sharemarket. The company’s shares rallied after it announced that a drilling program in Western Australia’s Paterson Range had intercepted high-grade gold and copper mineralisation. MD Gervaise Heddle says Australian investors have a greater appreciation of the local mining sector than their British counterparts, so it could make sense to make it easier for Australians to buy Greatland’s stock.

The mining sector’s interest in the Paterson Range region of Western Australia has increased in the wake of speculation of a major copper find by Rio Tinto. Although Rio Tinto has yet to comment, it has established a mining camp in the region and taken up a number of exploration leases. WA Mines Minister Bill Johnston says he has had no talks with Rio Tinto with regard to its presence in the Paterson Range. Fortescue Metals Group, Metalicity and Carawine Resources are among the companies to have acquired mining leases in the region in the wake of the Rio Tinto speculation.

Sandfire rolls the dice on growth

Original article by Tess Ingram
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 15 : 14-Aug-17

The mine life of Sandfire Resources’ DeGrussa copper project in Western Australia will be extended until 2022 when it begins processing ore from the Monty deposit. However, Paul Howard of Hartleys estimates that Sandfire will need to make another significant discovery within 12 months due to the time it takes to begin production. Sandfire CEO Karl Simich has indicated that in addition to further exploration, the miner may be prepared to buy assets that do not usually meet its criteria in order to maintain production.
