UBS analyst Myles Allsop suggests that Rio Tinto may seek to offload some of its non-core assets under new CEO Jean-Sebastien Jacques. Allsop says this could include its thermal coal, diamond and uranium mines, noting that they rarely receive much attention in Rio’s production reports. He also says Rio might also regard assets such as the Simandou iron ore project in Guinea as being non-core. Iron ore accounts for nearly 75 per cent of Rio’s earnings.

National Australia Bank’s MLC Super Fund has become the nation’s second-largest superannuation fund and the biggest retail fund after five separate funds were amalgamated. The enlarged MLC Super boasts some $A70bn worth of funds under management, and NAB has indicated that rationalising its super funds is likely to result in lower fees for members. The consolidation of its super funds will also enable NAB to separate its super and investment businesses from its life insurance arm, in which a controlling stake has been sold to Nippon Life.

Rio Tinto spin-off not likely

Paul Gait of Alliance Bernstein estimates that Rio Tinto’s newly-created energy and minerals division could be worth $US5.8bn to $US9.2 billion if it was spun off. He says Rio’s restructuring could indicate that it is considering a demerger. The energy and minerals division will comprise assets such as coal, uranium and titanium projects, plus Rio’s iron ore mines in Canada. Peter O’Connor of Shaw & Partners has downplayed the prospects of a demerger, and suggests that Rio is more likely to sell its Queensland metallurgical coal mines in the near-term.

Oil output in Bass Strait has fallen to around 40,000 barrels a day, compared with 500,000 a day when production was at its peak. ExxonMobil is believed to be seeking to offload a number of production licences in Bass Strait, which has yielded more than four billion barrels of oil for the group since it established a joint venture with BHP Billiton in the 1960s. The Bass Strait oilfields’ reserves are rapidly being exhausted, although the region holds considerable gas reserves.

Australian businessman Alex Waislitz holds around two per cent of Fairfax Media’s shares via Thorney Investment Group and the listed Thorney Opportunities fund. He has suggested that Fairfax could divest its regional newspapers division, which could include merging it with the regional newspapers arm of rival News Corp Australia. Waislitz also says Fairfax should not seek to acquire or merge with a free-to-air TV network, arguing that the group should focus on growth businesses such as Domain.

M&A won’t solve BHP’s growth questions

Original article by James Thomson

Citi analyst Clarke Wilkins notes that BHP Billiton has performed poorly in terms of mergers and acquisitions in recent years, and its high level of debt is likely to rule out acquisitions in the next several years. Wilkins adds that there is a dearth of suitable acquisitions at present, particularly in the copper and oil sectors, and he suggests that the resources giant could instead consider asset sales. He identifies BHP’s petroleum division as a potential candidate for asset sales.

Demerger option looms for Origin

The commencement of production at the Australia Pacific LNG project means Origin Energy’s oil and gas business accounts for the biggest proportion of its operations. This will strengthen the case for those who advocate that Origin should spin off its electricity and gas retailing arm, which boasts 4.3 million customers. However, Origin has some $A9bn worth of debt, which would make a demerger difficult to pursue at present, particularly given the continued weakness of the crude oil price.

Telstra will retain a 6.5 per cent stake in China’s Autohome following a deal to sell 47.7 per cent of its stake to Ping An Insurance Group for $US1.6bn ($A2.1bn). Telstra CEO Andy Penn says the telco will adopt a "balanced approach" to using the proceeds of the sale, which may include a capital management initiative. Bradley King of Armytage says his preference would be a special dividend rather than an on-market share buyback. He adds that the telco may seek other investment opportunities in Asia.
