Nova Entertainment, the radio stations group behind the Nova and Smooth FM networks owned by Lachlan Murdoch, in 2012 entered into a joint venture with US-based Rdio. The latter will now mount an increased effort to boost its local market share, after Nova divested its 50% stake in their Rdio Australia vehicle in late 2014. A number of similar online music streaming services have been closed recently, due to the dominance of Spotify and Pandora

Insiders claim that Fairfax Media is preparing a suite of divestments to prepare itself for a merger in 2015 with a free-to-air TV network. The newspaper publishing group will combine most of its radio assets, which under current media ownership laws prevent it from joining a TV broadcaster, with those of rival Macquarie Radio in a move worth $A200m. Fairfax CEO executive Greg Hywood also wants APN News & Media’s Australian Radio Network to acquire his company’s Perth station. At the same time Fairfax is about to pay $A75m for the remaining stake in Melbourne business Metro Media Publishing

The Australian Financial Review – Page: 16 : 18-Dec-14

BHP Billiton’s Australian-listed shares have fallen by more than 30 per cent since the group revealed plans to spin off its non-core assets. The stock has been hit by the downturn in the prices of commodities on which BHP will focus if the demerger proceeds. Michelle Lopez of Aberdeen Asset Management expects the demerger to go ahead, adding that it would most likely require a sustained decline in commodity prices for the group to abandon the demerger

BHP Billiton has ruled out buying the South32.com domain name, which is owned by a company based in Malibu. It is believed to have demanded $A10m to surrender the name. BHP recently revealed South32 as the name of the spin-off that will hold its non-core assets, and says it was not willing to pay the price being sought by the domain name’s owner. BHP pulls Nickel West sale as no buyer found

Original article by Barry FitzGerald
The Australian – Page: 20 : 13-Nov-14

BHP Billiton has abandoned its efforts to divest the Nickel West mining and smelting assets, as it was unable to find a buyer willing to pay a suitable price. The operations had been excluded from the non-core divisions to be hived off into a new listed entity by BHP as it concentrates on iron ore, copper, petroleum and coal. Analysts’ valuations for Nickel West had fluctuated wildly between $A250m and $A1bn, and the sale was hampered by a drop in the commodity’s price from $US21,000 a tonne in May 2014 to $US15,451 in November

The socially responsible investment industry in Australia is less mature than the same sector in the US. Alexandra P Cart, co-founder of US impact investment advisory firm Madeira Capital, says more accountability is needed in the sector. Metrics must also be improved. Impact investing recently attracted public attention after the Australian National University opted for the removal of several mining companies from its investment fund
