Crime concerns surge post-pandemic to highest levels in more than a decade

New Roy Morgan research shows that 66% of Australians agree that ‘Crime is a growing problem in my community’ – a higher figure than at any point in the last 10 years. The national trend over the last decade shows that agreement with this statement reached a pre-pandemic high of 60% in 2016-17 before moderating over the next few years and falling to a pandemic low of 51% in 2020-21. Since then, concern has surged and is up 15% points in only four years. Roy Morgan interviewed a representative cross section of 498,629 Australians electors aged 18+ over the decade from July 2015 to June 2025 who were asked to agree or disagree with the statement that ‘Crime is a growing problem in my community’. The State-by-State results of the research reveal significant differences, but the same clear upward trend since Covid. Queensland has recorded the highest current level of concern about crime at 77%, up 16% points in 10 years and up 17% points since 2020–21. Victoria recorded the sharpest rebound since the pandemic, up 21% points and 12% points over the decade (60% to 72%).

Australians are shifting their focus on what are the ‘Issues of most importance’ ahead of this year’s Federal Election. The rising focus on cost-of-living pressures – spanning day-to-day expenses, interest rates, and housing affordability – reflects a growing urgency among voters to address financial strain, making it the defining issue of this election cycle. Concern about ‘reducing crime’ has surged around Australia and for supporters of all major parties, especially in Queensland, doubling from 16% to 32%, in Victoria, with a rise from 14% to 26% and in the NT, up 13% to 33%. In Victoria, new State Liberal Leader Brad Battin faces his first electoral test in early February in the Labor Government-held seat of Werribee. Battin is a former policeman, like Federal Coalition Leader Peter Dutton, and will be hoping his tough reputation will add momentum to the Liberal Party’s campaign to win the seat.

Australia’s best and worst city suburbs for crime, according to the locals

Roy Morgan Research’s latest State of the Nation report shows that 57 per cent of Australians aged 14+ now agree that "crime is a growing problem in my community". Meanwhile, a Roy Morgan Single Source survey has identified the suburbs in each major capital city where the most residents believe crime is getting worse. In Melbourne, 73 per cent of Dandenong residents agree, while other suburbs where crime is perceived to be getting worse include Bradbury-Wedderburn in Sydney (69 per cent), Redland Islands in Brisbane (74 per cent) and Elizabeth in Adelaide (67 per cent). Meanwhile, Darlinghurst in Sydney tops the list of suburbs where residents believe that crime is not getting worse.
