NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon says authorities are looking into the purpose of Sajid and Naveed Akram’s trip to the Philippines just weeks before the Bondi Beach terrorist attack. They are believed to have received military training by Islamic State, which still has a presence in the Philippines. Meanwhile, Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett says the early indications suggest that the Akrams’ terrorist attack had been "inspired by Islamic State" rather than their religion. Police are also investigating claims that the Akrams had prepared a manifesto documenting their extremist beliefs; they are also looking into how Sayid Akram was granted a gun licence in 2023, despite his son having previously been investigated over his links to IS supporters.

The ABC has revealed that the Australian Federal Police sought access to the fingerprints and palm prints of journalists Dan Oakes and Sam Clark. The request was part of the AFP’s investigation into alleged offences under the Crimes Act, the Defence Act and the Criminal Code. Its actions have been criticised by John Lyons, the ABC’s head of investigations, who has expressed concern about the "criminalising" of legitimate investigative journalism. Press freedom has been under scrutiny in the wake of the AFP’s raids on the ABC’s Sydney office and the home of a News Corp Australia journalist.

Original article by Rick Morton

Australia’s family daycare industry is under scrutiny amid revelations of widespread fraud in the sector. Leaked documents show that 13 family daycare providers have been charged with fraud in the last 10 months, while the Australian Federal Police have seized some $A8m worth of assets. It is estimated that fraudulent conduct in the sector has cost taxpayers around $A1bn in the last two years, and there are concerns that some of this money could have been redirected to terrorist organisations such as Islamic State by their supporters in Australia.

Construction is one of the sectors said to be plagued by contractors deliberately letting businesses fail only to resurrect them in a "phoenix" move, designed to avoid taxation and employee entitlement liabilities. The Australian Taxation Office, Australian Securities & Investments Commission and Fair Work Building & Construction have announced they will look into the issue at eight of the nation’s major infrastructure developments. The Australian Federal Police will then hand an evidence brief to the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions
