The Victorian Office of Public Prosecutions has decided not to recommend charges over a stolen dictaphone, which featured in a political scandal. The device was reported as lost by a Fairfax Media journalist at the Australian Labor Party’s state conference in May 2014 in Melbourne. Kosmos Samaras, assistant state secretary of the Victorian branch of the party, told the police that he took the device from a lost-property box and downloaded audio files from the dictaphone, which he later destroyed

The Victorian Government’s target for paramedic response times in code one emergencies is 15 minutes in 90% of cases. However, internal data suggest that the actual figures are between 18 and 42 minutes across all of the state’s districts. Ambulance Victoria only releases a statewide average, and claims a rate of 73% for 15 minutes. It is seeking a suppression order in the Federal Court, after the paramedics union vowed to leak the real data to the media as part of an industrial dispute over pay and conditions

The Victorian Law Reform Commission has recommended a change to the Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried Act as it relates to suppression orders by the courts. It argues there should be "a presumption in favour" of such applications if they are made on behalf or by defendants who claim mental impairment. While the Criminal Bar Association and Victoria Legal Aid back the call, victim support groups and media law experts are urging caution. They fear the public may be denied information about dangerous murders, child abusers and arsonists
