Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has told an ABC documentary that chronicles the former Coalition government’s nine years in power that Tony Abbott was a "very dangerous prime minister". Turnbull, who toppled Abbott in 2015, claims that Abbott sought to exaggerate the threat of terrorism in order to frighten people, and that he was too forceful in his response to Russia in the wake of the downing of flight MH17 in 2014 in which 38 Australians died. Abbott, who did not take part in the documentary, has been approached for comment.

The ABC’s internal complaints department has found that "Fox and the Big Lie" did not breach the national broadcaster’s code of practice. The two-part Four Corners documentary examined how US cable network Fox News covered the 2020 presidential election. Fox News called for an external inquiry into the Four Corners story shortly after it had been broadcast, and the ABC is said to have provided Fox with a detailed response as to why its complaints had been dismissed. The ABC recently commissioned a review of its procedures for handling complaints, its first such review in 12 years.

The ABC has attracted further scrutiny in the wake of a controversial documentary on the 1979 Luna Park ghost train fire in Sydney. Communications Minister Paul Fletcher says the fallout from the documentary should prompt the public broadcaster’s management and board to review its policy for handling audience complaints, in order to determine whether it is functioning effectively. The ABC’s audience and consumer affairs division has rejected all complaints received with regard to the documentary.

The ABC continues to attract scrutiny over a controversial documentary on the 1979 ghost train fire at Sydney’s Luna Park. An independent review found that allegations raised in the documentary with regard to former NSW premier Neville Wran were unsubstantiated. The ABC’s former MD David Hill has criticised the public broadcaster’s management for defending the documentary and failing to acknowledge its shortcomings. Hill contends that the documentary breached the ABC’s editorial policies with regard to accuracy and fairness.

Leading hydrologists and ecologists have criticised the ABC over its ‘Four Corners’ program in an open letter. The episode on 8 July labelled the $5.6 billion Murray-Darling Basin Plan a "failure and a farce". Hydrologist Rob Vertessy, one of the letter’s co-authors, said those behind it challenged the assertion that the plan was a failure, even more so that it is a farce. He says no one in the water sector would deny that the plan is not without its flaws, but nobody has been able to come up with a better one.
