Dream in tatters: doping spotlight on Rioli

West Coast Eagles football player Willie Rioli has been stood down by the club after it was revealed ASADA has alleged he substituted a urine sample during a drug test in August. Former ASADA chief Richard Ings says it ‘can never be for a good reason’ when someone substitutes a urine sample, and it is an act that normally results in a four-year ban. Rioli will not play for the Eagles, who are seeking to defend their 2018 premiership, for the rest of the season, but he can still train with them.

The Australian Sports Commission will adopt a nationwide accreditation scheme for sports scientists and conditioning coaches. Such a scheme was one of the main recommendations of a Senate inquiry into the drug scandals at Essendon Football Club and the Cronulla Sharks. Sporting clubs that hire or continue to employ unaccredited sports scientists and support staff once the scheme takes effect will lose out on government funding. The scheme’s introduction has been welcomed by the Australian Institute of Sport.

Codes baulk at national sports court

Original article by Chip Le Grand
The Australian – Page: 3 : 25-Oct-17

The Coalition of Major Professional & Participation Sports has rejected the Federal Government’s proposal to establish a national sports integrity tribunal. The CMPPS has argued that key sports codes are likely to favour resolving cases of corruption, doping and match-fixing via their own tribunals. Sports codes’ involvement in the national sports court would be on an "opt-in" basis rather than being compulsory. A review panel is also looking at issues such as imposing criminal penalties for match-fixing and increasing the powers of the National Sport Integrity Unit.

Essendon Football Club posted a profit of $A720,000 in 2015, following a loss of $A3.2m in 2014 in the wake of the sports supplements scandal. The embattled club could face costs of up to $A20m as a result of likely legal action by the 34 current and past players who have been banned for the 2016 season for taking the prohibited supplements. Essendon will be seeking financial support from its network of wealthy business leaders as it prepares to deal with the fallout from the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s ruling. The Australian Football League may also face significant legal costs.

Punters who have backed Essendon to win the 2016 Australian Football League premiership will be offered a refund by Sportsbet in the wake of the landmark ruling on the supplements scandal. The firm notes that Essendon had been heavily backed to win both its first game of the season and the premiership. With many Essendon players now banned for the entire season, Sportsbet is no longer accepting bets on the team that will finish last on the AFL ladder.

The 2015 Australian Football League (AFL) season begins on 2 April, amid the ongoing controversy over Essendon Football Club’s supplements saga. The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority has indicated that it may appeal after the AFL’s Anti-Doping Tribunal exonerated all of the Essendon players. Some 350 people became Essendon members immediately after the ruling, and the club expects a big profit in 2015

Lawyer Natalie Hickey suggests that Essendon coach James Hird has already racked up legal costs of at least $A1m in the long-running doping scandal. This includes Hird’s own legal expenses and the costs incurred by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Agency (ASADA). The Federal Court is hearing a claim by Australian Football League (AFL) club Essendon and coach James Hird, who has been forced to step aside due to an alleged improper supplements program. They argue the AFL and the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority breached the law by conducting a joint probe. Hird on 11 August 2014 told the court he took part in a self-reporting exercise by Essendon against his will and "signed a deal of settlement under duress, threats and inducements"

ASADA could be in breach of law

Original article by Jon Pierik
The Age – Page: 41 : 15-Jul-14

A warning issued by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) could have breached legislation. ASADA filed its defence document on 12 July 2014, in which it stated that it could reissue show-cause notices to 34 current and former players of Essendon Football Club. Graham Smith, a partner with Clayton Utz, says the warning could be interpreted as an infringement of the model litigant rules
