A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 45.1 per cent of Australians aged 18+ drank wine in any given four-week period during 2015, while 37.6 per cent drank beer. The survey also shows that 4.6 million Australian women (or 49 per cent of the adult female population) drank some kind of wine in an average four weeks, compared with 3.7 million men (41.2 per cent). Meanwhile, 69.3 per cent of female wine drinkers consumed white wine over this time period, ahead of red wine (56.3 per cent), sparkling wine (42.3 per cent) and fortified wine (9.3 per cent). In contrast, male wine drinkers are more likely to drink red wine (78.1 per cent) than white wine (58.4 per cent).

Hipsters, Byron surfers boost Coopers in NSW

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that beer consumption has fallen to its lowest level in more than six decades. Coopers Brewery MD Tim Cooper believes that beer sales will not rebound unless the Federal Government scraps the wine equalisation tax rebate. New South Wales accounted for 24.5 per cent of Coopers’ sales in 2015, while the brewer’s home state of South Australia accounted for 24.3 per cent of sales.

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 5.4 per cent of Australians aged 18+ consume some kind of rum in an average four weeks, but this jumps to 9.8 per cent of Queenslanders. The survey, which was carried out in the year to June 2015, also shows that 8.3 per cent of Queenslanders drink dark rum in any given four weeks, compared with four per cent of Australians overall. Meanwhile, 5.9 per cent of Queenslanders drink Bundaberg Rum in an average four weeks, well in excess of the population average (2.4 per cent).

Don’t knock the box: Australia’s cask wine drinkers

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 45 per cent of Australians aged +18 drank wine in an average four weeks in the year to March 2015. This compares with 50 per cent in 2007. The survey also shows that 16 per cent of Australians drink cask wine, compared with 30 per cent in 2007. Analysis by gender shows that 18 per cent of men drink cask wine in an average four weeks, compared with 14 per cent of women, while people aged 65+ are almost 60 per cent more likely than the average wine drinker.

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that just over 1.1 million Australians aged 18+ drank vodka in an average four-week period (excluding in ready-to-drink beverages) in the year to March 2015. This is virtually unchanged compared with five years ago, despite overall population growth. Meanwhile, the average number of monthly gin drinkers nationwide has grown from 633,000 in the year to March 2010 to 860,000. However, the number of people who drink white rum has fallen from 446,000 in 2010 to 324,000, and tequila consumption is down from 336,000 to 312,000.

Low-carb beer drinkers not in it for their waistlines

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 8.5 per cent of Australians aged 18+ drink low-carb beer in an average four weeks in 2015, compared with almost 11 per cent in 2011 and just 1.6 per cent in 2006. Low-carb beer consumers now comprise almost 25 of Australians who drink beer in an average four weeks, compared with three per cent in 2006. The survey also shows that 11 per cent of Western Australians drink low-carb beer in an average four weeks, followed by Queenslanders (10 per cent). Just six per cent of Tasmanians drink low-carb beer.

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 37 per cent of Australians aged 18+ drank beer in an average four-week period during the year to September 2014. The survey also shows that 17 per cent of the nation’s beer drinkers consumed Carlton Draught, followed by Victoria Bitter (12 per cent) and XXXX Gold (12 per cent). Meanwhile, 94 per cent of Cascade Premium Light drinkers agree with the statement " I consider myself to be Australian", compared with 80 per cent of Australian beer drinkers overall

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 15 per cent of Australians aged 18+ drank Champagne or sparkling wine in any given four-week period in the year to September 2014. In contrast, 37 per cent of Australian adults drank beer during an average four weeks, while 42 per cent drank red or white wines. The survey also shows that 31 per cent of Australians who drink Champagne or sparkling wine belong to the affluent AB socio-economic quintile, while 37 per cent are from households with annual income of at least $A250,000

Drunks make hospitals hell

A survey by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine has revealed that intoxicated patients are a major problem for staff of emergency departments at Australian hospitals. More than 90 per cent of the 2,000-plus respondents indicated that they had been threatened or assaulted by a patient who was under the influence of alcohol in the last year.
