The federal government will release details of a drought assistance package on 7 November. Small businesses in drought-affected areas will be offered concessional loans of up to $500,000, while farmers who qualify for an existing concessional loan scheme will be offered a two-year interest-free period. Meanwhile, shadow agriculture minister Joel Fitzgibbon has called for a national drought strategy and urged the government to release the full report of the drought taskforce review that was undertaken by Major General Stephen Day.

The federal government will table its bill for a future drought fund in the Senate on 22 July; it was passed by the House of Representatives in 2018 but was not put to a vote in the Senate. Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the bill will not be changed in any form to satisfy the demands of Labor or crossbenchers; he adds that drought funding should be a "no-brainer" and not something on which deals need to be done. Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese claims that the government’s proposed legislation would see money taken from the Building Australia Fund.

Turnbull considering more drought aid

The federal government is likely to offer more assistance to drought-impacted farmers, as it looks at ways to help farmers adjust to a climate that is becoming hotter and drier. Short-term assistance that the government can offer could include helping to pay for the high cost of fodder transportation, while longer-term measures could include assistance with on-farm water storage and other infrastructure, including the possibility of tax write-offs. National Farmers’ Federation CEO Tony Mahar says subsidising crop insurance would also help farmers.
