ANZ-Roy Morgan New Zealand Consumer Confidence down slightly in July to 125.4

The ANZ-Roy Morgan New Zealand Consumer Confidence Index has eased from 127.8 to 125.4 in July 2017, although it is still the second-highest result in the past five months. The Current Conditions Index fell 4 points to 124.9, while Future Conditions dipped 1 point to 125.8. Consumers’ views of their own financial position eased from +14 to +10. Consumers’ views regarding their own financial situation in 12 months’ time were little changed at +32 (+33 previously). Net optimism towards the economy one year out dipped from +25 to +23, and when assessing the five-year economic outlook, optimism held at +23, which is well above the average since 2015.

The ANZ-Roy Morgan New Zealand Consumer Confidence Index has eased from 127.2 to 124.5 in December 2016, with the seasonally adjusted series showing a similar pull-back. The Current Conditions and Future Conditions Indexes fell 2 and 3 points respectively. The levels for both (Current Conditions 125.1; Future Conditions 124.1) remain very buoyant. Meanwhile, net optimism towards the economy in 1 and 5 years’ time fell to a net 22% (down 1) and 18% (down 10) respectively.

The ANZ-Roy Morgan New Zealand Consumer Confidence Index has risen from 117.7 to 121.0 in September 2016. Our seasonally adjusted estimate also showed a rise of three points, lifting from 122 to 125, which is the fourth consecutive increase and the highest reading since January. A net 31 per cent of New Zealanders expect to be better off financially in 12 months’ time, an increase of six points. Net optimism regarding the short-term economic outlook lifted from +5 to +12. Confidence regarding the long-term economic outlook increased from +10 to +14.

The ANZ-Roy Morgan New Zealand Consumer Confidence Index has fallen from 118.9 to 118.2 in July 2016. However, it is holding in at levels of elevation, and in line with its historical average. In seasonally adjusted terms confidence rose from 118 to 119, the second monthly rise in a row. The Current Conditions and Future Conditions indices were both down by a small amount, but they were up marginally in seasonally adjusted terms.
