Pollster Gary Morgan says Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market will become "Queen Victoria Chadstone" if a proposed $A250 million re-development goes ahead. Morgan, who is running for the position of Melbourne lord mayor, agrees with fellow candidate Sally Warhaft that the development should not proceed. Warhaft and Morgan, who had not met before the mayoral campaign, have urged voters to treat the by-election as a referendum on the market’s future. Morgan says Melbourne will lose a major tourist attraction if the re-development proceeds.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews says nobody should lose their job over the misuse of taxpayers’ funds during the 2014 state election campaign. He notes that the report of Ombudsman Deborah Glass made no recommendations about taking further action against any individual. Her investigation found that some field organisers were employed full-time by Labor while also being employed for two days a week as electorate officers on the public payroll. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy says the government ministers responsible for the $A388,000 rort should resign.

Original article by Rachel Eddie
The New Daily – Page: Online : 14-Feb-18

Victoria’s Acting Local Government Minister Martin Pakula has confirmed that a postal vote to elect Melbourne’s new Lord Mayor will be held on 12 May. The by-election follows the resignation of former lord mayor Robert Doyle over sexual harassment allegations. Possible contenders for Lord Mayor include Property Council head Sally Capp, Phil Cleary and acting Lord Mayor Arron Wood. Pollster Gary Morgan will be a candidate. Morgan says he ran against Doyle three times, and had argued on each occasion that Doyle was not a "fit and proper" person to be Melbourne’s Lord Mayor. Morgan was the only candidate to put Doyle last for preferences.

The Greens will now have three seats in Victoria’s lower house, following their strong win in the Northcote by-election on 18 November. With nearly 80 per cent of the votes counted, Greens candidate Lidia Thorpe led Labor’s candidate Claire Burns 56 per cent-44 per cent on a two-party preferred basis. Labor had previously held the seat, with the by-election resulting from the death of Fiona Richardson in August. The swing against Labor was over 10 per cent, while Thorpe becomes the first Aboriginal women to win a seat in the Victorian Parliament.

Ged Kearney will step down as president of the ACTU in July 2018 to become the Australian Labor Party’s candidate for the lower house seat of Brunswick at the Victorian election. Labor holds the seat with a margin of 2.2 per cent, and incumbent Jane Garrett will seek to move to the upper house. However, the Greens are gaining support in Melbourne’s inner-city and are seen as a real threat in the seat of Brunswick. Kearney had been widely tipped to pursue a seat in federal parliament if she entered politics.

Ditch lord mayoral car and walk, say Melbourne City Council candidates

Original article by Clay Lucas
The Age – Page: Online : 5-Oct-16

Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle has rejected suggestions that the office-holder’s official car and driver should be dumped. Councillor Ken Ong, Phil Cleary and pollster Gary Morgan are among the candidates for lord mayor who argue that an official car is not needed and the incumbent should travel by public transport or on foot. However, Doyle says the role of lord mayor requires attendance at meetings and functions across Melbourne. Meanwhile, Morgan argues that one four-year term as lord mayor is sufficient. Doyle is seeking his third term.

Team Morgan, Team Melbourne, the Greens and Phil Cleary have secured preference deals with each other in the lead-up to the Melbourne City Council election in October 2016. Lord Mayor Robert Doyle is seeking a record third term, and Team Doyle member Nick Reece says Melbourne could become "clown hall" if Doyle is defeated. However, lord mayoral candidate Gary Morgan says Melbourne is already "clown hall" under Doyle. The pollster argues that Doyle is not a suitable person to be lord mayor, noting that there are conflict of interest issues with Team Doyle.
