Both the Liberal and National parties are running candidates in the seat of Buninyong for the Victorian state election on 29 November 2014. While the Coalition partners normally allocate preferences to each other, the Nationals’ Sonia Smith has refused to back the Liberals’ Ben Taylor. The reason is the latter’s statement at an Australian Christian Lobby event that he would like to see a repeal of laws making abortions legal. Taylor notes however that the Government has no plans for such a reform

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that the unemployment rate in Victoria was 6.8 per cent in October 2014. It has remained at around this level for the last four months, and compares with a national jobless rate of 6.2 per cent. The jobs data presents a challenge for the State Government ahead of the election on 29 November. The state’s unemployment rate was just 4.9 per when the Coalition was elected in 2010

The Victorian Government has been criticised over advertisements that promote its commitment to creating 200,000 jobs if it wins the 2014 state election. The Opposition’s Martin Pakula describes the ad as "blatantly" political, but Premier Denis Napthine says it is about government business rather than political advertising. The Coalition itself had been critical of the Australian Labor Party’s expenditure on government advertising when it was in office
