New figures show that the average wholesale spot energy price in South Australia has risen to nearly $A170 in January 2018, compared with $A84 during the same period in 2017. The average spot price in Victoria has risen from just $A62 to $A139 over the last 12 months. Energy experts warn that more power blackouts and electricity price hikes can be expected due to the state governments’ focus on renewable energy targets rather than ensuring a reliable baseload energy supply.

South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill will commission what is the world’s biggest lithium-ion battery on 1 December. The 100-megawatt battery, which has been built by Tesla, forms part of Weatherill’s $A550 million energy plan, which he put in place following that state’s power problems in 2016. Meanwhile, recent claims by Weatherill that South Australia’s wholesale electricity prices are the lowest of any eastern state have been contradicted by data released by the ASX on 29 November.

Mike Henry, the head of BHP Billiton’s iron ore and coal operations in Australia, says the resources giant will not proceed with an open-cut expansion of its Olympic Dam mine in South Australia. He adds that BHP may expand the existing underground mine, but he cautions that any further investment may be affected by uncertainty regarding the state’s electricity supply and the cost of electricity. Production at Olympic Dam was disrupted by the state-wide power outage in September 2016.
