The ABC has come under scrutiny after new figures showed that its headcount rose by 2.8 per cent in 2020-21, with the addition of 120 additional employees. This includes 95 temporary positions. ABC MD David Anderson recently told a Senate committee that he did not think the public broadcaster’s headcount had increased in the last financial year. Liberal senator Ben Small says the ABC has been exposed as deceiving the public on resourcing, and notes that it is taking on additional staff at a time when its commercial rivals are cutting jobs.

BHP hiring as it faces critical lack of drivers

Original article by Peter Ker
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 17 : 27-May-21

BHP plans to hire an additional 200 train drivers for its iron ore operations in the Pilbara, in response to what has been described as a ‘critical’ shortage in the sector. BHP’s iron ore asset president Brandon Craig says the new trainees will have "rewarding careers" at the resources group, which suggests that BHP will not follow Rio Tinto in shifting to driverless trains. BHP uses automated trucks at its Jimblebar iron ore mine, while the Gina Rinehart-backed Roy Hill aims to fully automate its fleet of trucks by 2023.

Almost 60 per cent of businesses looking for lower-skilled roles are finding it hard to find new staff, while almost 50 per cent are finding it hard in general to recruit new employees. This is according to research by the Department of Employment, which found amongst other things that many potential employees were disinterested in the job, lacked personal presentation skills or submitted applications that were of poor quality. Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry CEO James Pearson says the survey demonstrates that action is needed to address the problem of prospective employees who are not job-ready.

Small Business Council of Australia CEO Peter Strong says an analysis of data on the impact of tax cuts for businesses with turnover of up to $A2m strengthens the case for across-the-board corporate tax relief. The analysis by AlphaBeta shows that 19 per cent of businesses that received the tax cut in 2015 had hired additional staff in the following two years, while three per cent increased their employees’ wages. Companies that received the tax cut also created jobs at a faster pace than companies that were just above the turnover threshold.
