Environmentalists have called for the federal government to halt all new fossil fuel projects in the wake of a new report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Kirsty Howey from the Environment Centre Northern Territory says development of gas resources in the Beetaloo basin must not proceed in the wake of the IPCC report; the federal government is providing up to $50 million in funding for exploration in the basin. Andy Paine of Frontline Action on Coal has also urged an immediate halt to fossil fuel projects, including the Carmichael coal mine in Queensland.

The federal government requires the support of four Senate crossbenchers for its legislative crackdown on protestors who engage in secondary boycotts that target mining companies. However, the proposed legislation has been criticised by Centre Alliance senator Rex Patrick, who has expressed concern about the increasing erosion of civil liberties under the Coalition. Labor and the Greens also oppose the legislation.

New Hope Corporation’s CEO Shane Stephan has called for the abolition of laws that exempt environmental activists from penalties for engaging in secondary boycotts. He says it is not right that anti-coal activists can target suppliers to the mining industry with action that would otherwise be illegal under the Competition and Consumer Act. New Hope recently advised that 150 workers at its New Acland mine will be retrenched at the end of October. A proposed $900m expansion of the mine has been on hold for more than a decade.

Market Forces will press for AGL Energy to close its Loy Yang A and Bayswater coal-fired power stations ahead of schedule. The environmental activist group will put a resolution to AGL’s annual meeting in September, calling for both plants to be shut down in 2030. Will van de Pol of Market Forces says AGL’s plans to keep the plants operating well beyond this date are at odds with its stated support for the Paris climate agreement. Loy Yang A is slated to close in 2048, and Bayswater is due to be shut down in 2035.

Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has disclosed that the Australian Conservation Foundation paid for him to tour the Great Barrier Reef and take a chartered flight over the site of Adani’s proposed Carmichael coal mine. ACF CEO Kelly O’Shanassy says Shorten subsequently discussed Labor’s options for blocking the Carmichael project with herself and environmentalist Geoff Cousins. Shorten has attracted criticism over his inconsistent stance on coal mining.

Vision Super hopes to attract new members for its sustainable balanced fund by targeting people who take part in climate change demonstrations and protest rallies. The superannuation fund, which boasts some 100,000 members in the local government sector and $A8.75bn worth of assets under management, is seeking to recruit a climate activist. John Roskam of the Institute of Public Affairs has questioned the appropriateness of Vision Super’s use of members’ funds to hire an environment activist.

Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign chairman John Podesta was paid $US7,000 a month by the Sandler Foundation, starting from February 2016. Documents released by WikiLeaks show that Podesta received the payments for his advice on Adani’s coal project in Queensland. The leaked information validates the Australian Government’s claims that foreign-funded groups were involved in the protest against the Adani project.

The Australian Government has flagged action to crack down on environmental activists’ use of the court system to block resources projects. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has raised the possibility of reviving legislation aimed at curbing vexatious litigation by environmental groups. The mooted crackdown follows warnings from India’s Power Minister Piyush Goyal that opposition to Adani’s Carmichael coal mine could affect his nation’s future investment in Australia. The campaign against Carmichael has received funding from at least one US organisation that has links to John Podesta, who is heading the presidential election campaign of Hillary Clinton.

India’s Power Minister Piyush Goyal has warned that the long-running opposition to Adani’s proposed Carmichael coal mine in Queensland could affect his nation’s future investment in Australia. Goyal added that Indian could source coal from countries such as South Africa and Indonesia if investing in Australian projects becomes too difficult. Recent media reports revealed that a leading Australian anti-coal group, the Sunrise Project, has been funded by US-based foundations. Documents released by Wikileaks also show that at least one of these foundations has links to John Podesta, who is heading the presidential election campaign of Hillary Clinton.

The Australian Labor Party has adopted a 50 per cent renewable energy target by 2030 under the influence of militant environmentalists. The party ignored objections from the Construction, Forestry, Mining & Energy Union. The Labor Environmental Action Network devised the target in late 2014. Its aim was to ensure that the party accepts the target as part of its ideology.
