The Australian Signals Directorate has publicly named a Chinese cyber espionage group that has been targeting public and private sector networks in Australia and the South Pacific region. The APT40 hacking group – which is also known as Gingham Typhoon, Kryptonite Panda, Leviathan and Bronze Mohawk – is believed to have links to China’s Ministry of State Security. Microsoft recently identified APT40 as the Pacific region’s most active cyber espionage group. It is not known as to whether Prime Minister Anthony Albanese raised concerns about Chinese hackers during Premier Li Qiang’s recent official visit to Australia.

Australia floats spy balloon fear with China

It is believed that Australian officials have voiced their concerns with their Chinese counterparts about the spy balloon that flew over the US and was subsequently shot down by a US fighter jet. Foreign Minister Penny Wong says the incident will not get in the way of Australia’s efforts to improve its relationship with China, while former Royal Australian Air Force chief Leo Davies says he is not aware that a Chinese balloon has ever entered Australian air space. Should one appear, he says any decision to shoot it down would depend on where it had been and where it was tracking. However, University of Melbourne atmospheric chemist Robyn Schofield says a balloon launched by China in China could not reach Australia, due to the wind currents, which either blow east-to-west or west-to-east.

Digital dossiers designed to blackmail, intimidate

Original article by Angus Grigg
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 3 : 26-Oct-20

Matt Pottinger has confirmed to the London think tank Policy Exchange that China is constructing ‘digital dossiers’ of millions of people around the world. The comments of Pottinger, who is the Deputy National Security Adviser to US President Donald Trump, follow the revelation that a Chinese military contractor had a database with profiles of over 2.4 million people globally, with the Australians listed including Prime Minister Scott Morrison and technology billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes. Pottinger says the compilation of such ‘dossiers’, aimed at influencing, humiliating, dividing and blackmailing opponents, has always been a feature of Leninist regimes.

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute has released a report on the Chinese Communist Party’s ‘united front system’. The report discloses how China’s global influence network extends well beyond the CCP’s United Front Work Department, and has been issued at a time of increased concern about the CCP’s influence in Australia, including Victoria, where Premier Daniel Andrews has advisers with United Front links; Victoria has previously signed up to China’s Belt and Road Initiative. The report was written by ASPI analyst Alex Joske, whose previous paper stressed the risks of scientific collaborations with Chinese military researchers.
