The Commonwealth Bank of Australia has been criticised for adding new targets to its bonus plan. The Australian Shareholders’ Association is concerned that CBA executives will now be rewarded for meeting targets that are unrelated to performance, following the introduction of a 25 per cent target for "diversity, inclusion, sustainability and culture". The bank’s existing 25 per cent bonus for "customer satisfaction" is also controversial. CEO Ian Narev’s remuneration for 2015-16 comprised a base salary of $A8.77 million and performance-linked bonuses of $A3.53 million.

The annual report of South32 shows that the Australian-listed group’s safety record in South Africa was reflected in the remuneration of senior executives in 2015-16. The miner’s board slashed the short-term incentive payments of CEO Graham Kerr and other top executives after four fatal incidents at its South African mines and aluminium smelter during the financial year. This is estimated to have reduced Kerr’s total remuneration by around $A1.2m.

Gay marriage vote is left at the altar

Original article by Phillip Coorey

The Australian Government will not have sufficient numbers in the Senate to pass its enabling legislation for a plebiscite on same-sex marriage, after Derryn Hinch and the Nick Xenophon Team decided to vote against it. The Australian Labor Party and the Greens had already committed to rejecting the legislation, and favour a direct vote by Parliament on the issue rather than a plebiscite. The legalisation of same-sex marriage is now unlikely to be on the political agenda again until after the next federal election.

New figures show that the annual remuneration of many senior federal public servants have risen significantly since 2008. The secretary of the Department of Prime Minister & Cabinet, Martin Parkinson, is paid $A861,700 each year, while Treasury secretary John Fraser is paid $A840,810. Both salaries are much higher than the remuneration of their predecessors during the global financial crisis. Public servants in many states have also enjoyed strong growth wages over the last eight years.

Too late to hold plebiscite this year: electoral body

The Australian Electoral Commission’s submission to a Senate committee suggests that there would be insufficient time to organise and hold a plebiscite on same-sex marriage before the end of 2016. The submission estimates that the entire process would take 29 weeks, but there are just 21 weeks left in the calendar year. The Special Minister of State, Scott Ryan, recently expressed his view that a plebiscite could still be held this year.

Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten continues to favour a parliamentary vote on the issue of same-sex marriage. He has committed to introducing legislation within his first 100 days in office if the Australian Labor Party wins the 2016 election. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in turn aims to hold a plebiscite on the issue by the end of the year if the Coalition is returned to office. A recent survey by Griffith University showed that 70 per cent of respondents support a plebiscite.

SurfStitch class action looms over briefings

Original article by Sue Mitchell
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 28 : 14-Jun-16

The disclosure practices of online retailer SurfStitch are under scrutiny in the wake of a large share price fall that reduced its market capitalisation by $A500m. The stock fell by 53 per cent to $A0.48 in early May 2016, in response to a profit downgrade. There had also been heavy selling in the previous week, after the group held private briefings for some shareholders. Glenn McGowan, a partner at law firm Gadens, may launch a class-action on behalf of SurfStitch shareholders.
