The US Secret Service has come under criticism from Republicans after Ryan Wesley Routh got close enough to Donald Trump to threaten his life, just nine weeks after Trump’s ear was grazed by an assassin’s bullet in Pennsylvania. Routh was detained by authorities after allegedly seeking to shoot the former president while he was playing golf at his private golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, while Trump says the attempted assassination would not deter his efforts to return to the White House. Democrat rival Kamala Harris said she was "deeply disturbed" by the attempted assassination, while President Joe Biden said he was "relieved that the former president is unharmed".

Former president Donald Trump received a hero’s welcome when he arrived at the Republican National Convention, with delegates chanting "fight, fight, fight" as he appeared with a bandage on his wounded ear. Meanwhile, Trump’s surprise choice of Senator JD Vance as his running mate continues to attract scrutiny, given his youth and inexperience. Democrats have claimed that Vance is an extremist on issues such as abortion, health and foreign policy. President Joe Biden has described Vance as a "clone of Trump" on certain issues, and says Trump will "surround himself with people who agree completely with him". Vance himself has previously been a vocal critic of Trump, but he is now a strong supporter of the ‘Make America Great Again’ movement.

Born-again Trump: Miracle Donald pivots to political peacemaker

Original article by Cameron Stewart, Adam Creighton

Former US president Donald Trump says God prevented him from being assassinated in Pennsylvania, adding that the doctor who treated his wounded ear in hospital described his survival as a ‘miracle’. Trump will address the Republican Party’s national convention in Milwaukee this week, where he will be formally nominated as its presidential candidate. Trump says it will be a "whole different speech now", and rather than largely targeting the policies of President Joe Biden, it will aim to bring the nation together; Trump adds that he has been given the chance to unite America. Biden has in turn used a presidential address from the Oval Office to call for the nation to "stand together", contending that there is no place for violence of any kind in America.

Secret Service faces review as top sniper claims this guy had help

Original article by Matthew Cranston
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 12 : 16-Jul-24

US President Joe Biden has ordered an independent review of the Secret Service in the wake of the attempted assassination of former president Donald Trump at a campaign rally on Saturday. The investigation will focus on how Thomas Matthew Crook was able to get close enough to shoot at Trump with an assault-style rifle, with one of Crook’s shots appearing to hit Trump on the ear. Meanwhile, Canadian Special Operations sniper Dallas Alexander, whose team holds the world record for the longest confirmed sniper kill, contends that Crook could not have been able to get in a position to shoot at Trump in broad daylight from a rooftop just a couple of hundred metres away without getting help from "somewhere within an agency organisation or government".

Supreme Court limits prosecutions of former presidents, casting cloud over charges against Trump

Original article by Jess Bravin

Efforts to prosecute Donald Trump over his alleged attempt to subvert the 2020 presidential election result have been struck a blow by the US Supreme Court, which has ruled that former US presidents retain significant immunity from prosecution for acts taken while in office. The Court’s decision could impact public opinion of it, given that three of its nine judges are Trump appointees, as well as the public perception of Trump’s potential criminality.

Steve Bannon headed the 2016 election campaign of former US president Donald Trump, and subsequently served as the White House’s chief strategist. Bannon says Trump regards Australia as a vital ally of the US, and he is likely to support the AUKUS deal to sell nuclear-powered submarines to Australia if he wins the 2024 election. Nikki Haley, the other remaining contender for the Republican nomination, also intends to support AUKUS and the transfer of nuclear-powered submarines to Australia if she becomes president.

Fox News has attacked the ABC over a two-part ‘Four Corners’ program called "The Big Lie". The program has been accused of being "error-ridden" and "conspiracy-laden", implying that the Rupert Murdoch-owned broadcaster played a part in Donald Trump’s refusal to accept defeat in the 2020 US presidential election, ignoring the fact that Trump attacked Fox’s coverage of the election campaign in more than 400 tweets. It is believed that the second part of the program will try to link Fox News to the attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters on 6 January.

Original article by Alex Leary

Former US president Donald Trump has used a campaign-style speech in North Carolina to argue that China should pay reparations of $US10 trillion ($12.9 trillion) for the global damage caused by COVID-19. He said the US and the world must demand reparations and accountability from the Communist Party of China for the pandemic, which is estimated to have killed more than 3.7 million people to date. Trump’s comments were made in the wake of growing speculation that the virus leaked from a Chinese lab. Trump also called for the US to impose a tariff of 100 per cent tariff on all Chinese-made goods.

President Donald Trump has vowed that those responsible for a series of attempted bomb attacks on a number of prominent individuals will be brought to justice. The homes of former US presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama are said to have been among the targets, while others include former CIA director John Brennan and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio. CNN’s building in Manhattan was also targeted with what are believed to have been pipe bombs, prompting the building’s evacuation.
