The Independent Brewers Association, which represents Australia’s craft brewers, states there are now 420 such breweries in Australia. The Association claims its members employ 2,400 people, many of them in non-capital areas, and that craft breweries contribute $A740 million into the economy. However, Burleigh Brewing co-owner Peta Fielding, claims the industry’s ability to expand is being hindered by the high amount of excise tax it pays, and the industry wants it to get the same tax treatment as small wineries

Professor Sinclair Davidson of RMIT University is among experts who have questioned the Federal Opposition’s proposal to fund services such as education via a sharp rise in the tax on tobacco products. He notes that fewer people are smoking, and he adds that raising the cost of cigarettes too much could reduce tax revenue as more people opt for illegal tobacco. Grattan Institute CEO John Daley has also expressed doubts that increasing tobacco excise would generate sufficient revenue to pay for services whose cost is rising faster than GDP.

Australian Greens leader Richard Di Natale has indicated that the party is willing to reach a compromise with the Federal Government on issues such as fuel excise and pension reforms. He says the Greens are open to an increase in the fuel excise, provided some of the additional revenue is used to finance public transport projects. Di Natale also says the Greens will support pension reforms if the Government agrees to undertake a previously shelved review of retirement income.

Beer excise puts brewers over a barrel

Tim Cooper, CEO of family-owned South Australian company Coopers Brewery, has criticised the biannual excise indexation for beer. The tax now accounts for $A15 of the price of a carton of beer, and Cooper argues that this has contributed to a decline in consumer demand in the sector of 8.4% between 2008 and 2014. However Coopers has managed to lift sales to 77.3 million litres in 2014, up 7% year-on-year, and to boost its market share to 5%. The core Original Pale Ale product is supplemented by overseas labels brewed under licence, such as Sapporo and Carlsberg
