Optus’s sports streaming service currently boasts more than 700,000 subscribers, and the telco is optimistic that the new English Premier League season will attract more customers. Optus CEO Allen Lew notes that no EPL matches will broadcast on free-to-air networks during the new season; he adds that in addition to live streaming of all matches, Optus Sport will seek to deliver additional value to customers via its coverage of the EPL. Optus initially secured exclusive EPL rights in 2015, and its deal was renewed in 2018.

Domino’s Pizza Enterprises says customer testing prompted it to replace Coca-Cola Amatil as its beverages supplier in Australia. Pepsi/Schweppes won the tender to supply soft drinks and bottled water. Michael Simotas of Deutsche Bank says Domino’s may be seeking to offset its move to start paying penalty rates, as Pepsi drinks tend to cost less than those of CCA. Woolworths recently advised that its supermarkets will not stock CCA’s latest sugar-free Coca-Cola product, on the grounds that consumers already have sufficient choice.

Andrew Levy of Macquarie Group says Singtel Optus’s deal to acquire the English Premier League rights is a "clear negative" for incumbent broadcaster Foxtel. Levy notes that English soccer is popular with Foxtel subscribers, and the pay-TV group has benefited from the Premier League’s exclusion from the anti-siphoning list. Fox Sports also recently lost the right to broadcast the popular Saturday and Monday night National Rugby League matches.

The price is tipped to be around $A30m per annum compared with $A10m now. Meanwhile it appears US-based media group Time Warner is no longer interested in a takeover of Ten, which remains a target of suitors Discovery Communications and Foxtel
