Marks set to replace Gyngell at Nine

Nine Entertainment Company is expected to announce that Media Venture Partners MD Hugh Marks will succeed CEO David Gyngell. Marks is a director of Nine, and his previous roles in the media industry include CEO of Southern Star and director of Nine Films & Television. Nine is also believed to be keen to retain Gyngell’s services in some capacity, which could include becoming a director or a consultant to the media group.

Former Australian Institute of Company directors chairman Michael Smith will succeed Russ Withers as chairman of convenience store group 7-Eleven. Withers and CEO Warren Wilmot resigned on 30 September 2015. Smith believes that the problem of wage fraud is more far-reaching than just at 7-Eleven, and he favours an amnesty for international students who have been caught up in the scandal. He also suggests that visa rules could be changed to allow them to work for more than 20 hours a week.

David Jones CEO Iain Nairn has declined to comment on his resignation after just over 12 months in the role. He will remain at the department store group during a three-month transition to new CEO John Dixon, who was previously an executive at Marks & Spencer in the UK. A spokeswoman for David Jones’s parent company, South Africa-based Woolworths Holdings, has refuted speculation that Nairn’s resignation was linked to an audit of expense accounts.

Peter Warne to take ‘big gig’ at Macquarie

Macquarie Group has appointed Peter Warne as chairman. He will assume his new role on 31 March 2016, replacing Kevin McCann. The Australian Shareholders’ Association is concerned that Warne will not be able to devote enough time to Macquarie, because of his many other commitments. Warne is chairman of ALE Property Group and OzForex Group. He also holds directorships at ASX Limited and the New South Wales Treasury Corporation.

Seven Group new boss set to take helm

Seven Group Holdings’ incoming CEO Ryan Stokes will receive an annual salary of $A1.6m when he succeeds Don Voelte in July 2015. Stokes has been an executive director of the conglomerate since 2010, and became COO in 2012. His remuneration also includes both short- and long-term incentive plans. Voelte revealed his intention to step down in April.

Woolies investors fear more pain before gain

Fund managers and shareholders are concerned about the possible actions that will be taken by the successor to Woolworths CEO Grant O’Brien in a bid to turn around its fortunes. These include reduced profit margins and asset writedowns. Cochlear looks to new CEO for kick-start

Australian-listed Cochlear has advised that the head of its North American division, Chris Smith, will succeed CEO Chris Roberts in September 2015. Roberts has been CEO since 2004, and Cochlear has indicated that it wants to place more emphasis on lifting sales and revenue under Smith. He will join Cochlear in the role of deputy CEO on 1 July. Cochlear shares closed 1.4 per cent higher at $A88.66 on 26 May.

Westpac nabs CBA’s Cobley for top role

Westpac has announced that Lyn Cobley will succeed Rob Whitfield as the head of its institutional banking division. Cobley is currently the head of retail products and third-party banking at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA). She had previously worked for groups such as Barclays Capital and Citigroup, and was regarded as a potential successor to CBA CEO Ian Narev. Whitfield will step down on 10 July 2015, after nearly three decades at Westpac.

Westpac institutional banking head Rob Whitfield leaving

Westpac may appoint an external candidate to succeed the group’s head of institutional banking, Rob Whitfield, who is widely tipped to stand down. Whitfield has been in the role since 2007 and has been at Westpac since 1986. He had been in the running to succeed Gail Kelly as CEO earlier in 2015. Internal candidates to replace him are said to include Anthony Masciantonio, Rachel Slade and Terry Winder.
