Data from EnergyEdge shows that the Queensland Curtis LNG project’s shipments have fallen by six per cent so far in 2020, while Australia Pacific LNG’s export volumes are down two per cent. EnergyEdge says this is partly due to the Queensland government’s restrictions on port access by Chinese bulk carriers. EnergyEdge expects the Santos-backed Gladstone LNG venture to record an 18 per cent increase in shipments for the March quarter. GLNG does not have any customers in China, although coronavirus-hit South Korea accounts for 47 per cent of its shipments.

Record LNG exports, but prices falling

The Gladstone LNG, Australia Pacific LNG and Queensland Curtis LNG projects’ export volumes rose to a record 5.4 million tonnes during the December quarter. Queensland Resources Council CEO Ian Macfarlane says the oil and gas industry contributed $8.2bn to the economy in 2017-18. Meanwhile, Saul Kavonic of Credit Suisse says declining gas production in Bass Strait has been the key contributor to rising gas prices on the east coast, and that prices would have risen much more if the three Queensland LNG projects did not sell gas into the domestic market.

The Queensland Government has assured Japanese steel mills that a dispute between Aurizon Holdings and coal producers will not affect the state’s coal shipments. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has held talks with Japan’s Foreign Minister, Taro Kono, after warnings from some coal buyers that the dispute could prompt them to seek alternative suppliers. Palaszczuk and Queensland Resources Council CEO Ian Macfarlane have both urged Aurizon to engage with the Queensland Competition Authority to resolve the impasse.

Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation recently warned the Queensland Government that it may be forced to find alternative sources for coal due to a dispute between Aurizon Holdings and coal producers. It centres on the Queensland Competition Authority’s draft ruling on Aurizon’s coal rail network. Aurizon estimates that the ruling could reduce its coal haulage volumes by up to 20 million tonnes a year. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk will give assurances to Japanese steel buyers that the state’s coal shipments will not be affected.

Bulk cargo carrier "Methane Spirit" will shortly leave the Port of Gladstone with the first shipment from Origin Energy’s Australia Pacific LNG project on Curtis Island in Queensland. Origin has pushed back the deadline for commencing exports from the $A24.7bn project several times. The first shipment was originally slated for mid-2015, but production did not start until December and Origin subsequently advised that exports would begin by the end of 2015.
