The Sydney Swans have again topped the annual Roy Morgan AFL supporter ladder as the only club with over 1 million supporters. The Swans now have 1.031 million supporters, an increase of 27,000 (+2.7%) on a year ago, according to the 2021 annual Roy Morgan AFL club supporters survey. Almost all of the AFL’s 18 clubs experienced a rise in support during the year to June 2021, and some of the biggest increases have come for teams enjoying success during the last two years. The clubs to experience the largest rise in support include Grand Finalists the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne, 2019-2020 Premiers Richmond and two of the most consistent performers during 2020 and 2021, the Brisbane Lions and Port Adelaide. Although COVID-19 has played havoc with scheduling throughout the last two years there are now more people than ever before, 8,857,000, expressing support for an AFL club, an increase of 1,335,000 (+17.7%) on a year ago. In addition, there are 7,580,000 Australians who watched an AFL match on TV, down 81,000 (-1.1%) on a year ago.

New research shows that Brisbane Roar outdid southern rivals to top Roy Morgan’s A-League supporter ladder, with 523,000 fans. Support for the Roar is up 96,000 (+22.5 per cent) on a year ago; high-profile English star player turned manager Robbie Fowler was appointed to helm the team in April. Defending champions Sydney FC were second in fan support, on 444,000 supporters; down significantly on a year ago as delayed stadium construction leaves the club without a dedicated home ground for a second year. Melbourne Victory is again Victoria’s leading club, and third nationally in terms of support, with 413,000 fans. However, the 2018 trophy-winners Perth Glory had the largest percentage increase, adding 94,000 supporters following their first Premiership, an impressive increase of 36.2 per cent on a year ago. Other clubs to experience an increase in support include Adelaide United with 340,000 supporters (up 19.3 per cent), Melbourne City on 178,000 (up 21.9 per cent) and Central Coast Mariners on 123,000 (up 23 per cent). The increases will be welcome news for the sport’s administrators, who have dealt with dropping game attendances in recent years.

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 7-Oct-19

Research by Roy Morgan shows that back-to-back NRL Premiers the Sydney Roosters have 261,000 supporters; their opponent in the 2019 Grand Final, the Canberra Raiders, have only 132,000 supporters, ranking them 15th in the league. Support for the Roosters is also more evenly divided on gender lines, with women comprising 45% of Roosters’ supporters compared to only 40% for the Raiders. The admission of the Roosters to the inaugural NRL Women’s competition in 2018 has boosted the club’s engagement with women. Meanwhile, Raiders’ fans have demonstrated a higher commitment to the game, with 31% going to NRL matches and 82% watching the NRL on TV. In contrast, only 24% of Roosters’ fans go to NRL matches and 71% watch NRL on TV. These are the latest findings from Roy Morgan’s Single Source survey, which is based on in-depth personal interviews conducted face-to-face with over 50,000 Australians each year in their own homes.

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 17-Sep-18

The Brisbane Broncos have again topped Roy Morgan’s annual National Rugby League supporter ladder with 1.09 million supporters (up 6.5 per cent on a year ago). It is followed by Melbourne Storm, which increased its support by 26.7 per cent to 1.05 million supporters. Seven NRL clubs increased their support in the year to June 2018, including the four most recent NRL Premiers. Roy Morgan is able to analyse the demographic makeup and intentions of NRL supporters across a vast array of important indicators, including the likelihood supporters of different clubs have of wanting to buy a new car in the next four years. A significant 19.9% of supporters of the Canberra Raiders plan on buying a new vehicle in the next four years, clearly higher than for supporters of the other 15 NRL clubs and well above the Australian figure of 11.9%. However, supporters of several other clubs have significantly higher intentions of buying cars in the next four years than the average Australian. These include the Parramatta Eels (17.2%), Melbourne Storm and Sydney Roosters (both 16.9%) and New Zealand Warriors (16.1%).

‘Tigers of (not so) old’ vs. ‘pride of South Australia’ for AFL Flag

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 29-Sep-17

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that AFL Grand Finalist the Adelaide Crows have 541,000 fans, which is enough to place the club fifth for total AFL supporters in 2017. Their opponents the Richmond Tigers boast 442,000 supporters around Australia, with one of the AFL’s best conversion rates of supporters to members – ranking fourth and converting 16.4% of supporters to members in 2017. Of the two clubs, Richmond are clearly adept at attracting younger supporters with 18.2% of Richmond supporters under 25 compared to only 12.5% of Adelaide supporters – an impressive statistic considering the unsuccessful Richmond teams of recent decades. The age profile of the respective supporter bases underlies why more Adelaide supporters (63.5%) watch the AFL on TV than Richmond supporters (59.8%), and also, conversely, why more Tigers supporters (11.0%) actually play Australian Football compared to only 6.4% of Adelaide supporters.
