Threadbare ethics of Australia’s fashion brands shown in charity group’s report

Charity organisation Baptist World Aid has released its annual ‘Ethical Fashion Guide’, in which it assesses 581 fashion and footwear brands against six key areas, including use of sustainable fibres, commitment to climate action and payment of living wages. The brands were ranked out of 100, with the total average score being just 29.25, down from 33.6 in 2021. Ethical underwear brand Mighty Good Basics achieved the highest score with 86 points, while 40 per cent of brands had no idea where their raw materials come from.

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 65.3 per cent of Australian women aged 65+ agreed that "I try to look stylish" in the year to December 2015, compared with 60 per cent in 2011. In contrast, just 24.8 per cent agree that "It’s important to look fashionable". Meanwhile, the proportion of older women who say that they "live a full and busy life" has risen from 65.5 per cent to 67.7 per cent, while 21.8 per cent "look for new experiences every day" (up from 17.9 per cent in 2011).

Myer’s spring parade on 13 August 2015 featured 27 brands. The Australian-listed retailer is in the process of changing its business model. Myer CEO Richard Umbers and chief merchandise and marketing officer Daniel Bracken believe that sales could be revived by focusing on fewer but stronger brands. In July 2015, the company removed about 100 national and international brands from its offer while adding new labels such as Aje, Daniel Avakian, Jack & Jones, and Calvin Klein White Label.
