Sally North says it is very important that companies make staff aware that working in extremely hot weather conditions can result in heat stroke. North is from Western Australia’s Department of Mines, Industry Regulation & Safety, and was commenting on a case it brought against Rio Tinto. The resources group was fined $80,000 after pleading guilty to failing to ensure the safety of workers. It followed an incident in 2017 when a worker died of heat stroke after he and two colleagues had to walk over 32 kilometres across rugged terrain and in temperatures that were estimated to exceed 37C.

Some 1,127 fine defaulters in Western Australia opted to serve time in jail rather than pay their fine or undertake community service in 2013-14. In contrast, just 442 defaulters were jailed in 2007-08. Corrective Services Minister Joe Francis is concerned that many people are taking advantage of laws which allow multiple jail terms to be served concurrently. He has called for reforms such as longer jail periods and deducting the fines from the payments of welfare recipients rather than jailing them

The Western Australian Govenment will crack down on motorists who use parking spaces that are reserved for drivers with disabilities. At present the maximum fine for using disabled parking bays without a permit is $A140, but this will be increased to $A300. However, disability advocates believe that more severe on-the-spot fines are justified. Courts will be able to impose fines of $A2,000 under the reforms, compared with $A1,000 at present

Tougher fines, demerits

Western Australian (WA) Road Safety and Police Minister Liza Harvey has announced an increase in fines and demerit points for motorists. This follows a Road Safety Council push for harsher penalties for such offences as using a mobile telephone while driving, running a red light or blocking emergency vehicles. Motorcyclists riding without a helmet will incur four points and a fine of $A550. However, a recommendation to also impose demerits for speeding at less than 10 km/h above the posted limit will not be adopted, despite all other states enforcing such a regime
