Women’s footwear brand Wittner has become the latest casualty of challenging market conditions in Australia’s retail sector. Sal Algeri and David Orr from Deloitte have been appointed as the administrators of Wittner, which has a network of more than 20 stand-alone stores and about 25 concession stores within David Jones and Myer outlets. Wittner was founded in 1912, and the administrators have emphasised that it will continue to trade as they seek a deal to sell or recapitalise the business.

Shoes Of Prey chasing the ‘athleisure’ dollar

Customised shoe maker Shoes of Prey is expanding into sneakers, the first unisex product it has offered since it was launched in 2009. Shoes of Prey is now solely an online retailer, having closed two outlets within David Jones and Nordstrom in October 2016. Founder Jodie Fox notes that this decision has helped to reduce its "cash burn", although she is unable to say when Shoes of Prey will become cash-flow positive.

Anchorage to buy Pacific’s Brand Collective unit

Private equity firm Anchorage Capital Partners is believed to be in talks to acquire the Brand Collective division of Australian-listed Pacific Brands. The division boasted sales of $A205m in fiscal 2014, but it posted a loss of $A0.9m prior to one-off costs. Anchorage will be hoping to emulate its success in turning around the fortunes of Dick Smith. Brand Collective owns brands such as Volley and Grosby, and operates several chains of shoe stores
