Nine Entertainment’s CEO Matt Stanton says the media group is interested in securing the broadcasting rights for Formula 1 racing. Foxtel currently holds exclusive rights to all F1 races except the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, which is also televised by the Ten Network under the nation’s anti-siphoning laws for major sports events. Foxtel is believed to be in the final year of its current three-year rights deal, and F1 would be a good fit for Nine’s Stan Sport streaming platform. The success of Australian driver Oscar Piastri so far in the current F1 is likely to have boosted local interest in the sport.

Melbourne-born Formula 1 driver Oscar Piastri is expected to make his debut in the Young Rich List this year, in part due to a new contract he has just signed with McLaren. The contract will keep Piastri at McLaren until at least 2028, and is understood to be worth round Stg20 million ($41 million) a year, while Piastri contends the secret to his success is to stick to a set routine before every race. The Australian Grand Prix will be held at Melbourne’s Albert Park track this Sunday, with a record crowd of more 450,000 expected to attend the track over the weekend, with fans of Piastri hoping he can become the first Australian to win the race.

‘Heartbreaking’: Grand Prix cancelled again

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the Victorian government to cancel the Australian Formula One Grand Prix for a second year. The 2021 race had already been rescheduled from March to November; the government has attributed its cancellation to factors such as the pace of the national vaccination rollout and a recent decision to slash the weekly cap on international arrivals. The logistics involved in the mandatory 14-day quarantine period for drivers and support teams is also said to have contributed to the Grand Prix’s cancellation. The Phillip Island round of the MotoGP world championship will also not be staged in 2021.

Police minister Lisa Neville says the Victorian government is having ongoing discussions about the timing and staging of the Melbourne Grand Prix with Australian Grand Prix Corporation and Formula 1. The race is normally held in late March, but may be rescheduled because of the state’s COVID-19 restrictions. Meanwhile, a new quarantine hotel for international tennis players coming to the Australian Open has had to be secured, after some of the penthouse owners at the Westin Melbourne, which had been due to host the players, threatened Supreme Court action over COVID-19 concerns.

1 in 4 new car buyers watch the Formula 1

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 22-Mar-17

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 13 per cent of Australians aged 14+ (2.65 million people) reported "almost always" or "occasionally" watching Formula 1 car racing on TV in the 12 months to December 2016. However, this rises to 24 per cent among Australians who intend to buy a new car this year. The survey also shows that 48 per cent of F1 viewers regard themselves as "a bit of a car enthusiast", and 37 per cent "would like a car that handles like a racing car". The levels of agreement with these automotive attitudes are more than twice as high among F1 viewers than the average Australian. Meanwhile, F1 viewers are around twice as likely as the average new car buyer to have Audi (106 per cent more likely) or Holden Special Vehicle (+97 per cent) on their shortlist of makes. They are also much more inclined to be considering a Jeep (68 per cent more likely than average), Mercedes-Benz (+49 per cent) or BMW (+47 per cent).

A new deal is about to be struck for the TV broadcasting rights in Australia to Formula One automobile racing. Insiders say free-to-air group Ten Network and pay TV provider Foxtel will jointly hold the rights after Ten’s current exclusive contract ends in late 2015. The price is tipped to be around $A30m per annum compared with $A10m now. Meanwhile it appears US-based media group Time Warner is no longer interested in a takeover of Ten, which remains a target of suitors Discovery Communications and Foxtel
